Re: [hlds_linux] SV_DOWNLOAD_URL-Problem
As I understand it, Valve only hasn't made any plans to port Steam to other operating systems apart from its home, Windows. This doesn't strictly mean it will never run there... but I guess Valve won't port it in its time of existence unless a licensor comes and pays billions of dollars for such an à la carte wish. Most unfortunate. ~~ Ondra Bart Seghers wrote: http://support.steampowered.com/cgi-bin/steampowered.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp .php?p_faqid=84&p_created=1092669681&p_sid=3shZX8*h&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEm cF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9ODkmcF9wcm9kcz0wJnBfY2F0cz0wJnBf cHY9JnBfY3Y9JnBfc2VhcmNoX3R5cGU9YW5zd2Vycy5zZWFyY2hfbmwmcF9wYWdlPTEmcF9zZWFy Y2hfdGV4dD1saW51eA**&p_li=&p_topview=1 Here ya go -Oorspronkelijk bericht- Van: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Namens Ondrej Hošek Verzonden: maandag 13 februari 2006 22:13 Aan: hlds_linux@list.valvesoftware.com Onderwerp: Re: [hlds_linux] SV_DOWNLOAD_URL-Problem http://www.steampowered.com/index.php?area=faq Riiight... that's a whole lot more information than I expected. ~~ Ondra Bart Seghers wrote: Exactly waht I mean my friend. No, Even if you remove the browser (IE) in windows it will be able to use the http-engine, since its built-in windows, with a couple of simple API queries. And I understand why they did (do) this. Because its so simple. You dont have to use your own XML-partser and so on. /Bjorn On Mon, 13 Feb 2006, BaKeD bEaN wrote: > -- > [ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ] > I must disagree with this. It won't be using IE as such, it'll be using "mshtml.dll" I imagine. IE is basically a window into this and can set various settings that this dll will utilise also. So even if you remove IE from your install, that dll will still exist as it's a fundamental part of the OS and upsetting it's settings will result in Steam web content failing. I use Firefox as my primary (default) browser and had been experimenting with setting up a proxy filter using a linux box on my network to route my kids browsers through. I was testing the proxy under IE as I didn't want to interfere with my normal browsing. After testing, I turned the proxy off and I noted the effect it had when I logged onto my CS server and the motd did not load. Turn the proxy back on and it loaded fine. This is when I started to notice the dependency. BaKeD bEaN wrote: -- [ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ] I must disagree with this. I don't have windows IE even on this computer. Re: AW: [hlds_linux] SV_DOWNLOAD_URL-Problem
That's fine! For what it is worth, I think the issue was either steam.exe or the registry. I did the following in testing (each individually): - deleted counterstrike.gcf and counter-strike directory - deleted clientregistry.blob - deleted everything in the root steam folder except steam.exe and steamapps folder (running steam.exe forced new files to be loaded) So essentially in my scenario, everything except steam.exe was fresh at some point and I never manipulated the registry. If it happened again I would probably go backup my registry key, then delete the valve key group, run steam.exe and see how it went. Hopefully it doesn't come to that. I checked the error logs, however this event does not make it to the log. Anyway, good luck and you may want to take it to the Steam forums for more help on the client-side. - M LuZiFeR wrote: Hi...
