Re: [hlds_linux] Another bandwidth question

2004-09-08 Thread Toker
I mispoke, I would be two hops away from the internet. I forgot to include
my router. I'm not worried about peering, or latency, or PSUs or re-entry
heat shields. I did the exact same setup in the town next to the one I am
in now, with the same ISP. I did it for 4 years, and then ditched the T1
when I moved. In that 4 years, aside from a bad slot in my router, which
the ISP replaced for free, there was no problem. People in the NorthEast
could get 20-30ms pings easily.

At the time, I was running 1.4 and 1.5. I could run 3x 18 slots servers,
all on the same 1.8ghz Xeon with 2 gig of ram, and the T1 without a problem.
This is why I am asking now, because 1.6 is big fat pig.

I will settle with the few other responses I recieved.

Laugh-out loud funny. Sorry. A 10 on the Unintentional Comedy scale.

Bottom line - it all depends. You can put a BILLION slots on a server, and the T1
will support them, but there might be a wee bit of lag. ;) Also - I'm guessing that
many folks on this list are either home-based, or colocated; very few with a dedicated
T1 that just services CS, so actual hard metrics may be hard to come by.

But yes, playing with netgraph to determine what speeds you are allowing, and then
dividing by T1, and then assuming there is no ambiguity or other external factors
whatsoever, you'll have your answer, or at least a starting point.

On a side note, try not to buy into marketing blather, "internet backbone", "QoS",
"spikes to the core", etc.

Good luck, and welcome to the community.
Mike

nah, I'm one hop off of the internet backbone. And its a real T1, not any
type of DSL. DSL is crap, no QOS at all. I'm guaranteed 5x 9s uptime, and
less than 20ms spikes to the core.

Nobody has ansered the question. Hardware aside, and hops from Tier 1
provider, how much kbps per player is realistic with a T1?

Again, hardware is not an issue, trust me. I have the latest and greatest
on both AMD and Intel. I'm not worried about server specs. Bandwidth is
what I am talking about.

As for the server rates, use your imaginations. With the highest rates, how
many slots can you fit on a T1?

Thanks for the speach.

I don't have the ability to keep adding slots. I need to purchase a pipe,
and don't want to purchase more than I need.

And yes, you are a troll.

Thanks for the informative reply though.

RE: [hlds_linux] Another bandwidth question

2004-09-05 Thread richy
This is not an easy question to answer as there isn't really an answer.
"IT DEPENDS"

It depends on lots of factors,
1. Server speed (Sys_ticrate)
2. Server rates
3. Client rates
4. Server size
5. any other services on that line

throughput on 1.5mb = 180kb (Approx, more of a guess tbh)

some lower throughput servers only average 3-4kb/sec /180 = 45

but that's using default / low rates and on a small server.

On my high FPS server with hi ADSL rates (25k 101 101) the throughput in
netgraph is usually around 8kb/sec and peaks at 11kb/sec

180 / 9 = 20 (And that might be pushing it, so 1 x 20man server
basically)

To be honest there isn't really a point in hosting from T1 when
datacenter prices are so competitive. Also you have redundancy and air
conditioning etc.

Colocate (it's the only way to fly these days)

Hope that helps but probably not want you want to hear.

Bear in mind that even if you do host it from t1 line you still have a
higher latency than you do with collocating due to having to travel
through internet backbone and then back out to the t1 from the client.

Not to be a troll, but if you "watch this list carefully" you would
already know the answer to this question which is: it depends. You would
also know that hitting REPLY to post a NEW topic is bad. And I hope you
know that there is no such thing as a 128 person CS server. To get more
to the root of your query, just keep adding servers/slots until you
reach a point where they become unplayable and then you will have your
answer. There are too many factors to give a definitive answer for all
cases. It's trial and error.

As far as bandwidth is concerned you should be able to host 40 - 45
players on that I would think. Not sure about the hardware though.
