Re: [hlds_linux] Server redirect

2008-03-28 Thread J. Miribel
Simple reason, the old
1-127.x.x.x - class A
128-191.x.x.x - class B
192.x.x.x - class C

is now totaly obsolete, and RIRs don't apply it anymore (something to do
with CIDR).

RIRs now gives IPs they can give and don't really care about the old
class system.

In fact this won't help on that matter because steam sends the server
list based on your IP, if you external IP starts with lets say 88, it's
send you all 88.xxx.xxx.xxx servers, then 89.xxx.xxx.xxx the
87.xxx.xxx.xxx then 90.xxx.xxx.xxx then 86.xxx.xxx.xxx at least thats
what was said last time alfred spoke about it (correct me if I'm wrong)..

Fact is that even if I'm french on 88.xxx.xxx.xxx public IP, the
89.xxx.xxx.xxx might be a polish range, 90.xxx.xxx.xxx could be US range
etc etc.. This is why the server list is (to my opinion) sent the wrong
way.. Would make much more sense to send only the IPs from your country
first: firts you get servers from my range, then the next French IP
server range etc etc..

Best regards

One thing keeps me wondering, which is that why your server has C-class
IP instead of A-class? This is propably the reason why it gets listed

2008-03-27 Thread J. Miribel
Hi all, hi TC,

I agree all players from europe play on our servers but this is the case
because both you and I have big servers...
On our CSS 64 ppl server, 55% of the players are from our country
(france) and on the 45% left 40 are from country around france: UK,
belgium, deutchland, spain etc... Eastern europe user won't connect
thats for sure ;)

BUT: in my cas, our server shows up real late in server list,
all because the server list query will send me servers with IP near
mine, and my personnal IP starts with "82.xxx.xxx.xxx", the server is
"194.xxx.xxx.xxx"... My server is then full of servers from all over
Europe before I get servers from my own country.. This server filter is
out of date...

There are at least 3 kinds of players:
Those who look for a ffa server with a decent ping (and those won't play
far from homeland)
Those who likes to play on special/modded servers (those we both welcome
everyday on our big servers TC)
Those who are there for scrimm (and they already know the IP of the
server they'll play on)

All I'm saying is that Valve should better filtrate the servers IP and
the server list should be sent depending on player's IP's COUNTRY /
Server IP's COUNTRY instead of player's IP / server's IP.
Why ? Because RIPE / ARIN / LACNIC and other RIRs won't allocate subnets
by country anymore, therefore the server listing is done the wrong way ;)

" Do you really think UK players will play on Italian servers? Man they have
1000+ decent servers in their country, they won't event think about
connecting to one..."

Players tend to come from all over the place for servers in Europe which can
be seen if you geo-ip profile your own players. Below is an example snapshot
of players on our UKCS TF2 servers from yesterday. As you can see, they come
from a wide area and pings stay low with good connectivity.

Moment in time snapshot:

http://images.ukcs.net/10002/tf2world.JPG

I think prioritising the list winding outwards from the location of the
server would be a good thing, but not to stop at a country's boundary. The
master list could hold long/lat in the record, and then it’s a simple bit of
maths to work out distance between two co-ords allowing sorting by distance.
Ping is an approximation of that which they may think is better - they'd say
its not distance its ping that’s important. However, during a full server
list refresh the pings obtained tend to be totally wrong due to the overload
on the clients connection doing all the pings.

I still wonder why you can't use a dns instead of an IP... We should
have a cvar like sv_favname...

Lets say its blank by default -> favorites menu memorizes the IP of the
server
When server admin sets something in like sv_favname "host.domain.com",
then favorites memorizes the dns name...

On the same kind of issue I still wonder why VALVe still uses their out
of date server listing stuff... I have to wait 5 mins to see half of the
servers of my country... I really think VALVe should geolocalize the
player's IP and send the server list depending on the players country...

I get people from around the world on my server. Seems to depend on the

optional.

Re: [hlds_linux] Server redirect

2008-03-24 Thread Rick Payton
I've always wanted to be able to put in a DNS name instead of an IP, and
KEEP it as a name, instead of having it automatically resolve once to
whatever the current IP is, and then stored as only that IP. That way,
as long as the server op keeps his DNS entries updated, you could just
connect to css.icountsheep.com instead of having to go in and manually
change your favorites IP addresses in the rare event of an IP address
change.

Is it really that hard to change that stored variable to accept text,
and then KEEP it as stored text?

I know, slow DNS servers may frustrate SOME players, but this would be a
HUGE boon to server ops running on a dyndns setup, which is where a ton
of server ops got a start on their server admin experience - running it
on their home connection. We all got started somewhere.

We should discuss this idea further, and if Valve wont implement it,
isn't there some kind of client side plugin that can implement it?

+1000 to the sv_favname idea - the favname should resolve to the

Re: [hlds_linux] Server redirect

2008-03-24 Thread J. Miribel

I've been using goelocalization databases for quite a while now, thats
really easy to implement... Too bad its not done already.. Do you really
think UK players will play on Italian servers? Man they have 1000+
decent servers in their country, they won't event think about connecting
to one...

Best regards
Julian

There is a redirect ability built in to the plugin interface, but it
requests the user to push F3 to accept the redirect.

There is no way to automatically redirect anyone. It used to be possible to
execute "connect ..." on the client, but this is one of the client commands
blocked from being executed on the server. Some "honey pot" farms had as
many as 50 servers redirecting to 1 server, which was annoying to players
and considered abusive. Because of people like that, regular server
operators can no longer use it in appropriate situations.

The F3 option would be good though. I'm not sure which admin plugins support
it. Check Mani, Beetle, and SourceMod to see.

2008-03-23 Thread Andreas Grimm
Hi,

valve is still working on the function, that server admins can change ip
addresses of gameservers without losing them in the steam favorites ...

my tip: change the servername and post the new ip address ... and add server
messages, for example with mani's ad's messages, every 30 seconds, that the
server is out of date and it has a new ip address ...

i have done this a lot of times and it worked very well ...

in css there are possibilies to pop up a dialog to ask a player if he wants
to connect to another server ... but im not sure how it works, never tried
that ... but a plugin could make it: check www.sourcemod.net

good luck
