Until one of those lovely privilege escalation exploits is in the wild :D Don't get me wrong, as a customer I'd love shell access. But as a supplier I'd prefer not to give "anyone" access at that level. It's just one more security risk you take and if someone exploits it, he could take down all customer accounts on the same machine. Now that situation would make you look moronic. ___ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds_linux

Thanks for all replies. I thought also about donwloading to my server and uploading again. Dave, i said before that they are my sponsors so i can't switch, but they do a great job except this :) Is autoupdate working ? 2009/9/4 Dave Williams > Nightbox, > > I really do have to say from a professional and players point of view > that if your GSP is restricting SSH on your nix box then they are > nothing but morons and you really should switch. Re: [hlds_linux] Updating a server using FTP
Nightbox, I really do have to say from a professional and players point of view that if your GSP is restricting SSH on your nix box then they are nothing but morons and you really should switch. It's not difficult to restrict ssh access to certain folders on a per user basis. If your GSP can't manage this then they really have no idea what they are doing. Of course if you only have on server hosted on a nix machine then you will need to ask them to add the - autoupdate switch as already has been suggested. Even then IMHO you will need to refer to point 1. Specifically the moron part. I know i don't post on this list much but that is because i just don't need too. The saying "too many cooks" springs to mind. Anyway, consider this with great thought as it can only be your decision. -Original Message- From: hlds_linux-boun...@list.valvesoftware.com [mailto:hlds_linux-boun...@list.valvesoftware.com] On Behalf Of Nightbox Sent: 04 September 2009 14:26 To: Half-Life dedicated Linux server mailing list Subject: Re: [hlds_linux] Updating a server using FTP I'm saying that because i want to know if i can update my server if i don't have SSH acces. 2009/9/4 Gary Stanley > At 06:44 AM 9/4/2009, Nightbox wrote: > >Is it possible ? > >___ > >To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list > >archives, please visit: > >http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds_linux > > ftp> site exec script-that-runs-steam.sh > > > > > ___ > To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, > please visit: > http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds_linux > ___ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds_linux ___ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds_linux
Re: [hlds_linux] Updating a server using FTP
Hi, Can can also download the files on your local host (use VirtualBox to have linux if needed) and upload all the files at same place on your server AND, in filezilla (or other) check when asked : overwrite only if size differ from remote (or same). So only updated files will be uploaded. Be careful with your server.cfg, motd.txt etc... Re: [hlds_linux] Updating a server using FTP
Why not just ask your GSP for SSH access? Unless they don't provide it, in which case they fail hard. Re: [hlds_linux] Updating a server using FTP
Hello, Just a thought / alternative: Add this as a users per minute cron: #!/bin/sh USER=`id -un` if test -e /home/$USER/update; then ./update.sh; fi if test -e /home/$USER/start; then ./start.sh; fi if test -e /home/$USER/stop; then ./stop.sh; fi then create scripts for update / start / stop, then whenever you want to run any of them just upload a blank upload / start / stop file Just a thought I threw together.
