RE: [hlds_linux] VAC CVARS

2002-08-13 Thread Stan

 Very well said stan.

:)

Hopefully, i dont come off whinny to
 valve about getting kicked.

Not at all.

I understand running in linux is
 unsupported by vavle.

I don't attempt this myself, but it would be nice to see a native Linux
version of HL/CS. Maybe that would be enough incentive for me (and others)
to give it a go.

 Even if I
had to buy a new copy of HL with linux binarys, it would be
more than happy to purchase the game twice. Or getting steam
working in WineX would be great too... I guess I'm just
 concerned about upcoming changes.

Well, how much are you willing to spend for it to work? $299? vmware might
run HL/CS just fine. They offer a trial version, but at $299 the full
version seems way too steep for your purposes. A 2nd machine running
windows and a KVM could be had for about about the same price.

I have a full license of VMWare for other reasons, but it doesn't run games for
poo... In WineX i get 90-100 fps, in VMWare, its around 15, heh. I bought a 128M
geforce4 and new sound card to be able to game in linux, so another 300 really
wouldn't bother me if it was actually efficient. I put it off for probably about a
year because my old hardware wouldn't run very well, but since I've gotten a solid
frame rate and full duplex sound I haven't looked back to windows. Nothing is going
to drag me back to windows, I'll quit gaming first :)

Personally the way I do it is i wait untill the next VAC update comes
out, parse my logs and get every kicked in between the dates of the VAC
updates. Then check on this list and elsewhere if there have been false
possitive claims while xx module was active. If not I then ban. that way
I save the 5% from being banned due to someone elses error.

Unfortunately, not many people are going to go to that much trouble. They
just ban and forget. And why would they believe that I don't cheat when
VAC is saying I do?? Most won't.

And BTW, my specific problem is I only run linux, which is surprisingly
unpopular even on a linux list. I understand I fall into the
unsupported group, but past history shows penguins aren't the only
victims. Today its linux, next update its this hardware/software combo,
tomorrow its that combo. And the more its automated the more innocent
people will get banned. I'm all for banning the little pukes that plague
our community till the end of time, but Its known that VAC is catching
alot more than just cheaters.

I prefer just waiting with the banning until VAC says its safe. My server
admins are getting real good at detecting cheaters and the obvious ones get
banned.

Any chance of getting a few numbers out of VAC regarding the logging of the
detections on our servers? Any shocking statistics? Like most cheating
occurs on german servers and so on? hehehe, no offence germans just kidding :)

[OT] As for surprisingly low numbers playing on linux. I dont think thats
surprising at all, you just mentioned one reason, the other obvious reason
for me is that I dont want to fiddle with WineX every time a new game comes
out. Usually takes a while before they are possible to use with wineX too.
And even though I prefer linux for lots of stuff including servers, I am
beginning to like windows too :p

ROFL, i knew that would get a response :D
I guess i could buy a ps2 or something. But fortunately, some games do actually have
native *gasp* linux binaries. I'm starting to get hooked on quake III arena, but I
have yet to check out the online action. I was very impressed that I could go to the
store, buy a cd, pop it in my machine, and natively install a game without a single
download or patch, or application layer. You corporate guys reading this ;)

It actually supprises me how many more game developers do not spend the
time porting their games to linux too. Considering the number of
'desktop' linux users is ever increasing, and systems are now shipping
with it I am truely amazed.

And those games that do have linux bins avaliable (RTCW for example) run
far better than on windows (dual boot and permorfance difference isnt
just noticable, its remarkable).

Hmm...what I would suggest is checking your logs, noting the kicked wonid's
(peeps on the list kindly told me about running a grep command and getting
it to list the output to a text file)and creating a banned.cfg list you can
then exec on your server.

Jay.

I wouldn't suggest this as of now, as VAC is still reporting false
positives. You don't want to ban people who were falsly identified.

Does anyone know if I can configure VAC to ban people instead of kicking
them?
