Re: [hlds_linux] srcds still unstable after 8/24 update - additional info

2006-09-27 Thread Roger Perkins

The instability I have been experiencing with Segmentation Faults appears
to have been related to a bad memory module. I had two 512MB DDR400
DIMM's, and the second one failed the extended BIOS memory test. Here is
a recent output of stats:

CPU InOut Uptime Users FPSPlayers
22.67 0.00 0.003356 165 83.06 12

cat /proc/meminfo looks quite different now:

MemTotal: 515504 kB
MemFree: 10092 kB
Buffers: 3544 kB
Cached: 81572 kB
SwapCached:564 kB

VmallocChunk: 499188 kB
HugePages_Total: 0

and so does cat /proc/swaps:

FilenameTypeSizeUsed
Priority
/dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol01 partition 2031608 8328-1

but at least its stable again and players are beginning to return.

Thanks to everyone who tried to help!

Those messages don't seem to have anything to do with srcds. The 'css'
you see in the messages is just the hostname of your box.
Is it possible your machine rebooted? Maybe caused by a power glitch?
Faulty hardware?
Maybe check the uptime of your system and see if it actually did reboot,
because you are right, those messages do seem to be boot messages.
Good luck..

Re: [hlds_linux] srcds still unstable after 8/24 update - additional info

2006-09-11 Thread Roger Perkins

Today I had the srcds application experience a segmentation fault again,
but this time it dropped back to a command line. I looked at the syslog
messages and found these entries with the same time stamp as the
segmentation fault console message:

Sep 11 09:12:14 css gpm[2131]: *** info [mice.c(1766)]:
Sep 11 09:12:14 css gpm[2131]: imps2: Auto-detected intellimouse PS/2

0xe000,0x400
Sep 11 09:12:15 css last message repeated 2 times
Sep 11 09:12:15 css kernel: agpgart: Found an AGP 3.5 compliant device at
:00:00.0.
Sep 11 09:12:15 css kernel: agpgart: Device is in legacy mode, falling
back to 2.x
Sep 11 09:12:15 css kernel: agpgart: Putting AGP V2 device at :00:00.0
into 1x mode
Sep 11 09:12:15 css kernel: agpgart: Putting AGP V2 device at :01:00.0
into 1x mode
Sep 11 09:12:15 css kernel: [drm] Setting GART location based on old
memory map
Sep 11 09:12:15 css kernel: [drm] writeback test succeeded in 1 usecs

I've looked up this message before, but I didn't think it was the cause of
my problem. My reasoning was that this message is in the log every time
the server reboots, so I believed this entry was a side effect of
restarting, not the cause.

Just thought I would add this in case anyone had experience related to
this.

Have you moved the install location? There isn't a space in the path, is
there? Is there anything remotely non-standard about the device, file
system, or mount method? Are there any kernel messages in your system
log?

One other thing -- double check the file and directory permissions for
the user that's running srcds. For whatever reason it's unable to read
very large numbers of files. Check that the ones spamming those error
messages actually do exist of course!

I have not changed the install location since the server was originally
configured a year ago. The file and directory permissions are proper for
the user running srcds. I even double checked the rights on the update
tool.

Here is more info on my system:

df -h states:

The CPU is not overclocked, and runs cool at about 115 degrees F.

I looked for the following files that the console said were missing:

Error: Material "models/props/cs_office/clouds" : proxy "TextureScroll"
not found!
Error: Material "models/props/cs_office/clouds2" : proxy "TextureScroll"
not found!

Indeed, they were not there. I do not understand how anything could be
missing on a standard map when I have specified -autoupate and -verify_all
options. Any ideas here?

I would so dearly love to get back to playing instead of debugging!

Thanks for your suggestions!

Probably not what you are wanting to hear, but.. I find that sometimes
re-installing the source server from scratch has a beneficial effect on
things.
Perhaps you could try to install a server with steam into a separate
directory and running that as a test. If it stays stable, just rebuild
your server from there.
Have solved many of my problems this way. At least if it doesn't stay
stable, you will know it is something related to the OS or the hardware
and not the CS:S server.
Good luck,

Re: [hlds_linux] srcds still unstable after 8/24 update

2006-09-06 Thread Roger Perkins

I deleted the InstallRecord.blob, and the addons directory was renamed.
Launched the server with -autoupdate and -verify_all, and it crashed on
cs_office with a segmentation fault in less than 5 minutes. At other
times I have seen it run for 3 or more standard maps with mp_timelimit=20.

Interesting thing, though, when I started the server I just noticed it
complains about the following:

Error: Material "plaster/slide" : proxy "AnimatedTexture" not found!
Error: Material "models/props/cs_office/clouds" : proxy "TextureScroll"
not found!
Error: Material "models/props/cs_office/clouds2" : proxy "TextureScroll"
not found!
Executing dedicated server config file
Error: Material "sprites/bubble" : proxy "AnimatedTexture" not found!
Error: Material "models/props/cs_office/screen" : proxy "AnimatedTexture"
not found!

I don't know why it would complain about a standard map, but I don't think
it would be related to the Segmentation Fault I am experiencing... Maybe
I'm wrong, though.

Thank you for your suggestion! This has been a very frustrating
experience with a formerly stable server :(

It seems to crash on random maps, including standard ones. I just
restarted it with cs_office, and it crashed within 5 minutes. I have not
seen any pattern with which maps it crashes on, unfortunately.

Thank you for the suggestion, though!

Can you tell us which maps it is crashing on? If it's happening really
frequently then take a couple of days worth of logs and do a bit of
deductive reasoning.

I don't think it's just custom de_ maps, btw. I think there are a very
large number of custom maps that may start behaving badly.

I guess you could try deleting the InstallRecord.blob in the main directory
and re-running steam to check all the files and make sure they're all
there...possibly something didn't finish loading? Anyway...make sure you
have disabled all plugins by renaming the plugins directory. I had this
problem and took off the plugins by renaming the plugin directory and the
server no longer crashed (had a similar error).

Re: [hlds_linux] srcds still unstable after 8/24 update

2006-09-06 Thread Roger Perkins

Since nobody has replied to this, I decided to delete the
~/.steam/ClientRegistry.blob as suggested in another post. This has not
resulted in any better stability.

Anyone have any other suggestions for me?

Roger

My srcds server has become very unstable since the 8/24 update. It
randomly crashes with the following console message:

./srcds_run: line 344: 2684 Segmentation fault (core dumped)
$HL_CMD
Add "-debug" to the ./srcds_run command line to generate a debug.log to
help with solving this problem
Sat Aug 26 19:31:10 EDT 2006: Server restart in 10 seconds
Sat Aug 26 19:31:16 EDT 2006: Server Quit

I have also seen the following in the server's message log:

Aug 30 16:19:53 css kernel: Eeek! page_mapcount(page) went negative! (-1)

After that message, the server locked up completely and I had to resort
to
the reset button :(

I tried removing all plugins (Mani and Mattie) and still experienced the
problem. I saw other forum posts for problems with the 8/24 update
stating they believed it was related to custom de_ maps, so I removed all
de_ maps from the rotation and maplist, but the problem persisted. I
have
not seen any other posts regarding segmentation fault, however, so I
opened a Steam support ticket. They told me they couldn't help, but
pointed me to this listserve.

I am running srcds on Fedora 2.6.17-1.2142_FC4. Hardware is EPOX
8KRA2+ with AMD Athlon XP 3200+ and 1GB RAM. Command line to launch my
game is as follows:
./srcds_run -console -game cstrike -heapsize -secure -port 27015
+maxplayers 22 +map cs_office -tickrate 50

This server has been rock solid for almost a year before this update.
Any
assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
