[Hornlist] Digest Feedback

2003-01-16 Thread Jon C Woodyard
Let me levy a mild criticism of this e-mail site.

One of the services that could be most helpful to many of us is that of
sharing experiences in performance. This is particularly so when there
are countless interpretations and misinterpretations of standard
repertory. I recall one post asking about standing during the Mahler
First and there was considerable feedback on this. (Is this musical
interpretation?) On the other hand, when asking about Beethoven Symphony
No. 3 and whether is was commonplace to have all three horns play a
certain line together, only one digester(?) responded. The Beethoven 3rd
is one of the most commonly performed pieces in the repertory of almost
every professional and amateur orchestra...and we have only one comment?
We in community orchestras usually have one or two performances of the
major pieces. Usually it is a unique experience, e.g., Berlioz Symphony
Fantastique, or God forbid, Rouse's Infernal Machine, so we count heavily
on advice from our colleagues who may have performed this and others,
before.

If we can't get advice on this digest, then where? This is probably one
of the largest collections of horn players who regularly talk with each
other. Wish we did more of this rather than anecdotal information about
Anna Russell (whom I dearly love as a comedienne)

Let the games begin.

Ive seen a video of the Konzertstuck with Stephan Dohr
Dale Clevenger and a couple of other players from the
berlin Phil. The conductor was Barenboim with the
Berlin Philharmonic. I dont believe the video is
available in the states because the format had to be
coverted for me to watch it.

  Russ,

I got this CD when it came out and was astonished
 to find no mention
 of
 the
players, so I wrote to this list and someone
 (don't recall, but I bet
 it
was one of our brethren in Albion) wrote back that
 Nigel Black,
 Laurence
Davies, Laurence Rogers and Peter Blake were the
 most excellent
 soloists.

Hi Jon,

Although I'm not a working pro and I normally wait for
folks who actually know what they are talking about to
answer these questions however, I will jump in. In
community orchestras I have played the Beet 3rd four
different ways. 1. 2nd doubles 1st; 2. 3rd doubles 1st; 3. all
the horns play in unison (hopefully in unison); and 4. 1st plays
alone. I have never played it with an asst. 1st horn. I am
looking at the copies of the horn parts from the last time I
played it and the notes indicate that the 3rd horn doubles
the 1st horn.

My personal preference is to have all 3 horns play as it's
the end of the piece and in community orchestras the first
horn is probably getting tired and the 2nd and 3rd parts are
probably lost in the mix anyway (and it's a nice little bone to
throw to the 2nd and 3rd horns).

Just my $.02 worth.

This is true of just about any piece. I sometimes wonder how
touring virtuosos can stand to play the same program four nights
a week for an entire season, much less make the music sound fresh
most of those times. Even the Goldbergs, last five Beethoven
piano sonatas, Diabellis, and so on would wear thin after a
while, I think.

Howard makes an interesting point. On University of Michigan's five
month cultural exchange concert tour to the Soviet Union et al we
played 100 concerts and we played excerpts from My Fair Lady in almost
all of them. We were all pretty much sick of it by the end of the tour.
Before the tour, we were offered free tickets to a Broadway show of our
choice. I can't remember any exceptions, we all chose My Fair Lady. When
we got back to New York, we were very sorry for the choice, but we
couldn't change it at that point. So we all grudgingly went to the show.
You know what, we loved it! It was immensely refreshing to hear someone
else perform it.

I have a dvd of this concert that I will be listing on ebay probably
sometime next week and it is in NTSC format. Also on the dvd are
Beethoven's 8th Symphony, Liszt's Les Preludes and Wagner's Ride Of The
Valkyries.

Hello

I am a high school student looking for a good music camp this summer
(2003).
Any suggestions? I have played the horn for 6 years. I am looking for an

orchestral experience.

Thanks for your help.
