About a month ago, a lister asked for information about selling a horn in
Japan, and someone else provided either a shop name or the name of an
individual. I had saved this information, as I anticipate that I may have
need of it in the near future, but have now lost it due to MS operating
system problems. Would the person who provided the name of this Japanese
contact please send me a note? Thank you in advance, very much.

As far as I remember, this person offered a horn (Rauch) which he bought
in Japan at Japanese price, asking for a minimum of 9.000.-$

[Hornlist] Non transposing stopping mute

2003-09-30 Thread Ger Otten
Hi,

Years ago. I started playing horn on a old Bb-horn with a stopping valve.
So stopping was, especially with a stopping mute, relative easy. After a
while I changed to a double horn. This horn, as for most double, does not
have a stopping valve. Besides, transposing, the F-horn has to be used
which is more difficult deping on the register you play.

So for some years I had the idea of developing a non-transponing stopping
mute that can be used on both the F and Bb side of the my horn without
transposing.

It stayed with this idea, did not make time for realizing it. But in the
last number of Brass Bulletin I read that a Japanese manufacturer is
offering a non-transposing stopping mute.

What I would like to know what do other horn players think of using an
non-transposing stopping mute ?

With kind regards,

Ger Otten

I prefer hand stopping, using the F-side ! No problems about what mute
to use.

And, F-side is not more difficult than Bb-side, if you are used to take
advantage of both sides (easier fingering, more facettes of colouring
the tone, security, easier arpeggios, easier #-tonalities easier
bb-tonalities)

These non-transposing mutes sound great and are really
convenient. Unfortunately the mute I tried was manufactured
in Japan, and because of the shift in time zones between
Japan and California, it made me play 24 hours behind the other
members of my section on stopped notes. I could have transposed
ahead by 24 hours to restore the ensemble, but this was just
too much trouble. I didn't have the same problem with my Yamaha
horn, but I think it was made in the US.

Gotta go,
Cabbage

Are you saying that some of your notes were stopped
for 24 hours and then allowed to proceed?
