[Hornlist] Encouragement to Amateurs
Larry: I would like to express my endorsement of your sentiments re Professor Pizka's many contributions to this list. Additionally, I would like to tell you that in 1980 I resumed attempts at horn playing after a 28 year layoff. It took me some 4 years as well until I thought I played as well as when I quit to go to graduate school in 1950, I have considerable mileage on these old bones, but I continue to learn and love my romance with the horn. I was principal horn of The McLean Symphony, a community orchestra in McLean, VA for almost 18 years. I resigned because I lacked the time to keep up with orchestral playing as well as working with my brass and woodwind quintets. More recently, I moved back to my place of birth, Montgomery, Alabama where I am living happily with my new wife (the first one had died some time ago), still playing the horn, while fighting off the effects of congestive heart failure and diabetes. Despite all this, I feel great! message: 2 date: Fri, 2 Jan 2004 12:37:42 -0800 (PST) from: Larry Jellison [EMAIL PROTECTED] subject: [Hornlist] Thank you, Professor Pizka for your years of service to the members of this list. To the young, please take my advice that the firm yet loving approach of Prof. Pizka in his contributions to this list are very worthwhile for you to study. This list, with professionals and experienced amateurs making contributions, has given me guidance for improving my horn playing. After a three-decade layoff from horn playing, I now play at the level where I was when I quit horn as a young man. (My comeback, incidentally, has taken four years. Others may be able to achieve the same in a lot less time.) === Jim Price Jes Takin it Easy in the Deep South 2603 Fairmont Rd. [Hornlist] No more wisdom (teeth)
After getting my wisdom teeth out and sitting out about 2 weeks, I have picked up my horn again. Picking it up was the easy part, when I got around to playing I could tell I was in trouble. I can hardly play: I can't really feel the notes too well, and my sound is shaky. (On the bright side I've found that not playing has cured me of some of my bad habits) I asked my horn teacher what to work on, he said scales would be good to start out on, but not to go too high. I'm wondering if anyone has any additions to make to that. I'm looking for something that isn't too easy to slip back into those habits. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks William Foss The various viewpoints on Horn tone are held with such fierce devotion that one encounters otherwise in religous controversies. -Gunther Schuller _ Have fun customizing MSN Messenger learn how here! http://www.msnmessenger-download.com/tracking/reach_customize ___ post: [EMAIL PROTECTED] set your options at http://music.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org
[Hornlist] Rome Festival
Well here it is again. Time for those hornists planning to apply for the Rome Festival. I have a question for those out there. What would be good audition music to use for the tape? I am planning on using Strauss' Concerto No.1, movements 1 2 for the solo and for horn excerpts; Strauss - Till Eulenspiegel, Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5, Wagner Siegfried (long call). Any comments or suggestions on how to play them would be greatly appriceated. I will be sending my audition tape in near the end of this month. So any personal comments and suggestions, please e-mail me directly. Thanks for your time. James Potter __ Do you Yahoo!? Hi, William - Probably one of the things you're experiencing is pressure (as in air) in the not-yet-quite-healed tooth socket areas. There should also be some physical pressure from the various muscles near the same places used in playing. It's probably more weird that dangerous. I'd suggest long tones, not worring about going high, as your teacher comments, remembering that there's a whole lot more air pressure and muscular tension the higher you go. Also, this would be an excellent time to go through Kopprasch with low transpositions. Second line G would be a good top note at first. Any kind of playing, just in short sessions, I think would be good. I had mine out when I was in the army because the price was right, and I sure don't remember any problem. I'm sure I said it hurt like crazy and I needed at least a month off. I don't remember much pain, if any, after the teeth came out. More like just different sensations. Re: [Hornlist] Rome Festival
I've heard, very vehemently, that the Rome Festival is a sham and that I should stay away from it. Especially dissapointing for me as I've been taking Italian this and last year. ciao, Chris Otherwise, the excerpts you've mentioned are very standard and fine to send. --- James [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Well here it is again.
