That article is from (I believe) 1998. I thought I remembered reading

OH! That's some hot banter about a horn-Ouch! I guess now alot of people are
going to start buying Engelbert Schmid's horn's. Maybe Herr Schmid will do an IPO of
stock and his company will stand to make many millions of Euros. Don't get me wrong-I
love the instruments he makes-best of the best-right up there with Lawsons and Bergs
and Rauchs! There are others who make world-class instruments-too many to name-no
offense intended.

All the best,

The etudes I played for the audition were: Kopprasch p. 13 #19 and, not
Pottag-Hovey, but Preparatory Melodies p. 27 #67. So if you want to get out

[Hornlist] Accepted!

2004-01-29 Thread William Foss
I just found out that I have been accepted into the 2004 Missouri FIne Arts
Academy. Only 200 students from the entire state are chosen every year in
areas such as Instrumental music, visual arts, vocal music, etc. That's
about all I know about it. To get in I had to send off an audition tape with
a slow, melodic etude and a technical etude, in addition to essays about
fine arts in my life and my dreams for the future. For the melodic etude, I
chose one from the Pottag book that I really liked that was also All State
audition material. The technical was a page long exercise from Kopprasch; it
was a killer. Just thought I should share this with all of you, whom I would
like to thank for increasing my knowledge and helping me get this spot.

RE: [Hornlist] de profundis

2004-01-29 Thread Hans Pizka
Ever heard about Verdis opera "Falstaff" - last act. Nice farts from 2nd
& 4rth horn on low E, bottom E, written on the first ledger line below
staff if modern bass clef is used. A big mess always, as this entrance
is not to be a loud fart but one of the tricky stinky ones. Much
poot-poot to get the note. Big laughter, hysterical laughter, while the
first horn has to continue with the very sad melody. They try to make me
laugh too, but unsuccessfully. Technique: if emotions or laughter is
coming up, think "sauerkraut" & everything works as usual.

Another famous fart instrument is the Contrabassoon, e.g. in Petrouchka.

And a related subject that came up long ago: there are some musical
works
in which an instrument is called upon to simulate a fart. Therefore,
serious hornists ought to practice the nuances so as to produce a high
quality fart. The only one I remember occurs in the musical "Canterbury
Tales", and it is written in the horn part as a low Bb. The effect was
a
real crowd-pleaser, but in all seriousness it had to sound just so, not
underdone or overdone, and that took some experimentation. A little
different every night, of course. On stage, an actor was on a ladder
trying to sneak into a woman's bedroom, and instead he got mooned and
took
one in the face.

At the time I didn't quite understand why the horn was selected for this
honor over the trombone, but I suppose that it makes sense - with proper
hand technique, the pitch can be rolled about as well as a 'bone could
do
it using the slide. The guys behind me seemed envious - I heard them
practicing farting also. I'm grateful that we didn't come to blows.
