[Hornlist] re. contents of horn Digest vol.32 issue 1/ Audition repertoire

2005-08-02 Thread carol everson
>From Roscoe Raven in Bermuda:
The concertmaster of a very famous orchestra once told me:
'Anyone can prepare a fast solo piece. We give candidates something slow to
play, because that sorts out the real musicians from the mere NASCAR
enthusiasts'.
Another good piece of advice from an orchestra principal-if you have the choice
of a very difficult solo and one not so difficult that you play better, always
play the easier solo.

Incidentally, I had a friend who was very good at psyching out the competition
at auditions-he used to take a pregnant woman with him into the warm-up room
(not neccessarily his own-he was quite shameless about borrowing other peoples'
pregnant women).
Her job was to sit in a corner twisting a handkerchief between her fingers,
watching him with eyes full of love, and occasionally saying softly: 'Oh
James...I do hope you do well this time'.
It was a very effective morale-buster!

RE: [Hornlist] horn & flute

I've done the Bach duet. Really liked it. I remembered it being a bit
difficult, but that's when I was still a Junior in college.

Subject: [Hornlist] horn & flute

I'm looking for recommendations for horn & flute duets. I've found
listings for several but aren't familiar with any of them and none of
them are in the library here. I've found:
Hartzell - Workpoints 3
Boucard - Suite Champetre
Johnsen - Suite, op 41
Olsen - Nocturne, op 57 no 2
Presser - 5 duets
Jan Bach - 4 2-bit contraptions
Sellers - Piece
Does anyone have any favourites, or know of any others?

thanks,
Dubrena Myroon

Re: [Hornlist] solo of your choice

2005-08-02 Thread billbamberg

I've used Mozart and Strauss since high school. It's been many years since
I've done critical auditioning. I've always enjoyed performing the Frakenpohl
piece in the Mason Jones collection, and I've come across several other pieces
he's written that are real crowd pleasers. My son and I routinely perform his
duet for horn and tuba as part of brass quintet performances. For the last
several years I've been using Frakenpohl's Three Movements for Solo Horn as an
audition staple. Although the part is no more difficult than the Strauss, the
fact that it is for solo horn requires developing a real style and allows a
finished performance rather than unaccompanied excerpts. All three movements
only take five minutes, and it can be edited down to less than three.

I rarely find horn players who are even aware of this work. Has anybody else
had success with this piece, or have any other suggestions for stand alone solo
works for auditions?

Aa Luke said before, stay with the best known pieces for any audition like
Strauss no.1, Mozart no.2 or No.3 or No.4 depending on the vacant position.
Think it is more worth to play as few notes per $ but highest quality than
to play a million notes per $ neglecting all beauty of phrasing, tone etc.

An audition committee cannot be impressed by fast notes only while missing
the opportunity to use the beauty of our instrument to impress the members
of the jury. Technique can be produced by a machine also, but beautiful
expression is human.

Greetings to everybody from Kathmandu.
