[Hornlist] The Real Prof. I. M. P.
Michael K wrote I read a message from Mr. Betts (i rememeber him) quoting the ever elusive Prof. I. M. Gestopftmitscheist...and I do remember him. But just who is this elusive figure in imaginary horn land? Perhaps a horning "Santa Claus" if you will? No...because Prof. I. M. Gestopftmitscheist is a tangible being...but just what is his REAL identity? Come one...somebody help me out here. Yes, Michael, there is a Prof. I. M. Gestopftmitscheist! He exists as certainly as afterbeats and mouthpieces and stop mutes exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Prof. I. M. Gestopftmitscheist! It would be as dreary as if there were no little Michaelses. There would be no horns then, no intonation, no water keys to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, only clams, dents, repetitions of Leroy Anderson's Sleigh Ride, and long viola cadenzas. The external light with which hornplayers fill the world would be extinguished, pfft! Not believe in Prof. I. M. Gestopftmitscheist! You might as well not believe in Prof. Hans Pizka! You might get your papa to hire numerous lackies and toadies to watch in all the exits on the New Jersey Turnpike to catch Prof. I. M. Gestopftmitscheist, but even if you did not see Prof. I. M. Gestopftmitscheist skidding off at (or near) Exit 2, what would that prove? Nada! Nichts! Zilch! Nobody sees Prof. I. M. Gestopftmitscheist, but that is no sign that there is no Prof. I. M. Gestopftmitscheist. The most real things in the world are those that neither hornplayers nor conductors can hear. Did you ever hear bassoons playing in tune? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they can't. (Just kidding!) Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unhearable and unseeable in the world. You tear apart your Ipod and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest horn player, nor even the united strength of all the strongest horn players that ever lived could tear apart. Only Kopprasch can help us push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Michael, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding, particularly when you consider all the possible transpositions and alternative articulations. No Prof. I. M. Gestopftmitscheist! Thank Pizka! he lives and lives forever. A thousand years from now, Michael, nay 10 times 10,000 years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of horn players. Or whatever. Gotta go, Cabbage ___ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org

Re: [Hornlist] Sarre chamber orchestra - Konzertstuck
Jim, Check out the IHS site for more information on Georges Barboteu. There is another Nonesuch LP with Georges Barboteu and Gilbert Cousier playing both Vivaldi Concerti for two horns. Finally, I have an LP with Georges Barboteu playing the Mozart Concerti. None of the LP's has been re-released on CD's that I'm aware of. Technically the playing on all the recordings is first rate. (The 1st horn playing on the higher of the two Vivaldi Concerti is breathtaking.) Also all the players use vibrato extensively, which I believe was the standard practice of the "Horn School" in France at the time the recordings were made. I'm not sure if it still is... Are there any players (retired/active) on the list that live in France who can provide any additional insight? Sam - Original Message - From: "jim thompson" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Monday, December 26, 2005 2:26 PM Subject: [Hornlist] Sarre chamber orchestra - Konzertstuck Besides the 'Romantic' Symphony 2 by Howard Hanson, I had (for free) another record transferred to cd that was the Konzertstuck played by the Sarre Chamber Orchestra and the four horn players were, Georges Barboteu, Michel Berges, Daniel Dubar, and Gilbert Cousier. Does anyone know anything about these people, or this group? This was the first Konzertstuck I'd heard on record so the recording is at least 40 years old and I really know nothing about them. thanks, Jim ___ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/prodtech%40dejazzd.com ___ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org

[Hornlist] THE LEXICON OF CLAMOLOGY
Now, here it is so you can have the correct knowings of the makings of all your clams! THE LEXICON OF CLAMOLOGY by PROFESSOR I. M. GESTOPFTMITSCHEIST NO-SPEAKY - A late entrance due to the lack of vibration of the embouchure. Considered by most horn players to not be a "true clam." PHWOP - Falling of to below the pitch on the end of the last note of a passage usually in diminuendo. PHWAP - Sailing to above the pitch on the end of the last note of a passage usually in diminuendo. PHWUP - A No-Speaky at the end of a long diminuendo causing the note to end earlier that printed. Again, considered by most players not to be a "true clam." PHREEP - A soft miss of a note from either above or below usually only heard and noticed by your colleagues in the horn section and not the conductor or the audience. SCHPLAT - A loud miss of a note from either above or below either upon entrance or in the course of a passage. Must have an indefinite pitch at its inception before arriving on the printed note. SCHPLEAH - A loud miss of a note from above. Must have a definite pitch at its inception. Similar to a Baroque appogiatura in sound. SCHPLOOEE - Same as a Schpleah, but from below. SCHPLADAT - A very rapid Schplat. Can be doubled into a SCHPLADATSCHPLADAT and tripled and quadrupled as well. The sky's the limit on this one. When enough SCHPLADATS are coupled together that the pitch of the printed note is never distinguished, it becomes a SCHPLADATANDO. SCHPHLOINK - A very long No-Speaky on an entrance where the listener and player are kept in suspense as to if when the note will speak. Sometimes coupled with a Schpleah, Schplooee, or Schpladat to become a SCHPHLOINKTER. SCHPHLINK - A Schphloink occuring in the middle of a passage. Sometimes coupled with a Schpleah, Schplooee or Schpladat to become a SCHPHLINKTER. SCHPLOIEEOIEEOI - Encircling the printed note from above and below, never getting on the pitch, but clearly marking the pitch of the notes above and below. Usually occurs in the middle of slow passages but occaisionally occurs upon entrance. Prof. I. M. RE: [Hornlist] The Real Prof. I. M. Gestopftmitscheist
I met him last time at the Banff International Horn Symposium & we had a performance together, where he played a multi-horn & made a "ko taw" (chinese), when I appeared on stage playing Long Call. I have this all documented in foto & video. Quite a character, but a tremendous good player & good fellow. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Omar Kolaghassi Sent: Wednesday, December 28, 2005 11:37 AM To: Horn list Subject: [Hornlist] The Real Prof. I. Thanks Lawrence - I've more or less made up my mind to order a boxed set of Brahms Choral music with the 4 songs performed by the London Symphony Chorus/City of London Sinfonia conducted by Richard Hickox. There's a whole lot more choral music in the five box set - and I'm sure there's plenty that's worth discovering. Re: [Hornlist] Bach b1102
I have to admit that I have never seen them list Wagner tubas, but as they do sell certain instruments only in certain countries, i.e. the Vienna horn model, which is sold only in Europe, if at all. So I don't want to say definitively no they don't, but I am really certain that, no they don't. Paxmaha Bob Gibson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: I also think they make Tuben. - Yahoo!
