[Hornlist] John Graas bonanza

2006-02-02 Thread Peter Hirsch
Just got 6 CDs of John Graas related material on the Lonehill label.
This seems to be an outfit operating out of Seville, Spain and the discs
can be obtained from T.A.P. Music (some of them, at least) or try
Amazon, which is how I located my copies. Caveat - the six CDs contain a
certain amount of stuff that has pretty much no relation to JG. They
have the entire Jazzlab and Jazz Studio series on them, including entire
LPs devoted to other artists (happily, one of them is David Amram and
his Amram-Barrow Quartet). All told, there seems to be at least 4 to 4
1/2 CDs worth of west coast horn jazz from the fifties and that is
pretty cool (literally) in my book.

Catch you later, daddy-o,

Peter Hirsch

[Hornlist] Re: Horn quartet with band

2006-02-02 Thread Peter Hirsch

Back in the sixties (before they changed the water), I used to play in a
summertime community band in the park and the director (a Sansone 5-valve
player himself) regularly programmed a piece called French Horn Frappe (accent
aigu on the e) that was for 4 horns and band. I seem to recall the name David
Bennett (spelling uncertain) at the top righthand corner. It was real easy, but
fun, as I recall. Don't think I can tell you any more about this, but I'll bet
that there are still ways to summon up the charts for this.

Good luck,

Peter Hirsch

Re: [Hornlist] Dennis Brain's horn)

2006-02-02 Thread Alan Cole
Conventional wisdom is that he started on Raoux-Milleraux (an authentic
French horn, as it were, made in France) & then switched to a single horn
in B-flat made by Gebr. Alexander. A photo of him wearing white tie &
actually playing an Alexander Bb horn is the cover illustration on some of
the Dennis Brain albums.

Anyone want to buy a used 11D? I'm getting a Paxman.

I have nothing against Paxman, but if your only complaint is that you have
an "impossibly bright tone," try a mouthpiece with a deeper cup!

(Unless you simply want a new horn. There's nothing wrong with that,
either.)

What would you think if you spent a bundle, then played your new Paxman with
the mouthpiece you're accustomed to, and found *it* too bright as well?

I joined one of these groups once. Unfortunately, they tossed
me out after the first concert, since that meant I HAD
played since high school. I didn't realize I was supposed to
send a substitute to the concert, to keep my playing record
clean.

Re: [Hornlist] Fingering chart Mellaphone

The fingerings for mellophone are identical to trumpet, note for note.
The instrument does all the transposing if the part is written in the
right key for your instrument.

Re: [Hornlist] Fingering chart Mellaphone

2006-02-02 Thread Alan Cole

Use trumpet-cornet or TC baritone fingering chart for Eb mellophone.

(When you ask for the trumpet-cornet or baritone fingering chart, don't
tell anybody the real reason you want it.)

For F mellophone, use the same fingering chart but play every note 1 step
lower than written on the Eb parts.

Good luck.
