[Hornlist] Beta Blockers -

2006-08-25 Thread Larry Jellison
Regarding William Botte's concern that beta blockers
may be performance enhancing drugs similar to drug
enhancing drugs used by athletes, consider the facts
that beta blockers lower blood pressure and reduce the
rate of the pulse. Reducing blood pressure and
reducing the rate of the heart beat reduce the body's
ability to perform. Strength and endurance are
reduced. Yes, nervousness can be reduced by these
drugs, but beta blockers are actually performance
dis-enhancers in the parameters considered important
to athletes.

I take a beta blocker to lower blood pressure, but I
reduce the dose or delay taking the beta blocker if I
have a heavy rehearsal or concert ahead of me due to
the debilitating effects described above.

[Hornlist] Dave Krehbiel 70th birthday

2006-08-25 Thread Robert Ward

Hello all (and there are many of you...),

Dave Krehbiel's 70th birthday is on September 2, a cause for much
celebration! (For those of you on the horn mailing lists who perhaps
do not know Dave by name, he was the Principal Horn here in San
Francisco from 1973 until his retirement in 1998. He also played in
the Chicago Symphony with Philip Farkas and also as Principal Horn in
Detroit)

Anyway, I would like to create the Perfect Storm of Birthday cards,
and I need all of your help. If you can each send Dave a card (timed
to arrive on Sept. 2):

Dave Krehbiel
P.O. Box 905
Reedley, CA 93654

and then also forward this email to as many other horn players or
acquaintances of Dave as you can think of.

Whether you know him from being his student, having been inspired by
his playing, having listened to his Orchestral Excerpt CD, or just
think (like I do) that he is simply one of the greatest people and
most wonderful horn players you have known, please join me in this
Birthday Card Tsunami.

Thank you so much for your help and take care everyone!

Bob

Here in LA, the only stars visible are cemented into a sidewalk, and
you don't want to be walking around that neighborhood looking for them
after dark. If the Mars story is true, there'll probably be a drive-by
shooting.

I got that message, too - but my brother (an amateur stargazing buff)
said it's bunk - the same message makes the rounds every year.

I'll make no claim one way or the other - on a good night, I can find
the big dipper (hmmm - I think I may have set up some potential
Cabbaging...)

[Hornlist] Dave Krehbiel's Birthday card Tsunami....First class delivery times

2006-08-25 Thread matthew scheffelman
From the information on-line about first class
delivery times, the average delivery time for a first
class letter is 1.86 days. It used to be 1.5?.

SO, hoping Dave goes out to the beach on friday (
maybe a walk through the Redwoods ending on the
beach?)...an early arriving letter will be ok, I think
from the east coast send it tues or wed, anywhere
else, wed..
Overnight letters are inexpensive, around 14 bux and
you can be sure it will arrive on Sat.

Re: [Hornlist] Beta Blockers -

2006-08-25 Thread stuart womble
If I might add one thought... Beta Blockers do not
make you play better so they wouldn't really be a
performance enhancing drug. The only thing that I
can think of that makes you perform better is practice
and preparation.

Stuart

BTW many professional athletes use Beta Blockers and I
havent seen a Congressional hearing on the legalities
of that.

Beta Blockers are Illegal in the Olympics as well as

of sharp-shooters.
This thread has beed played out. Lets pass it in.
