[Hornlist] Sterling Silver Bells.

2006-12-08 Thread matthew scheffelman
Anyone have a opinion as to how Sterling Silver bells
respond in both pit orchestra and large hall playing?
Are they as heavy feeling as I would imagine? I played
a Sterling leadpipe, it was different.

Playing in a pit, Sotto Voce works the best for most
of the book( and the killer microphone that amplifies
me, Neumann I believe). I wonder how a Sterling Silver
bell works with a Sotto Voce approach and amplified.
Contrast that with large orchestral work.and
needing to be heard at a distance.

It seems many Sterling bells have been bought, so I
imagine someone has some actual playing experience
with them, other than Schmid's analysis, which is
always seems spot on, but I was curious as to other
opinions from our breathen and sisters.

[Hornlist] End of semester

2006-12-08 Thread Gary Greene
Once again, American colleges are coming to the end of a semester. If you
have an American college email address and are going to be away from your
email for a while, please go to the hornlist website and check no mail for
your list account. This preserves all of your settings but doesn't have
your email pile up, which could lead to the system unsubscribing you.

As a subscriber, you have your own website associated with the horn list
that allows you to personalize your horn list experience. Your site will
be

  http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/your_email_address

where you fill in your own email address at the end.

You go to this site, make your changes and requests (including
unsubscribing), enter your password (this was in your welcoming message when
you became a subscriber), and voila!

If you don't know your password, you can request it to be sent to you from
this site as well.

Happiness to all in this season, in the new year, and in years to come.

Re: [Hornlist] Meinl Flare: Good, Bad or Ugly? Alexander 107

2006-12-08 Thread Avrum H. Golub, M.D., J.D.
Dear Nelson,

What differences you notice?
What type of metal was the bell made of?
Was the bell a particular model or size?

What metal is your 107?
When was your 107 made?
Have you made any modifications to this horn?

Avrum

PS: I¹ve played goldbrass 107s as my main instrument since 1971, and played
on a borrowed brass 106 since 1969.

Most likely the exposed solo (with woodwinds), measure 381 to 391. I
worked this up for an audition in the early '90s

2006-12-08 Thread Anna Henry
Hi Mathew,

The book I use for auditions and study is David Thompson's Orchestral
Audition Repertoire. It contains complete parts, not just excerpts. I can't
remember specifically, but I think Mahler 9 is in it. It's a wonderful book,
and I use it all the time. The parts come in a binder so that you can take out
what you need and not carry the rest of the 1000 pages with you. The only
drawback, it's about $100 - but I've gotten that much use out of it. You can
find it at:

  Hope that helps,

RE: [Hornlist] Repeated F# - entrances

2006-12-08 Thread hans
What is so difficult with the f#2 ??? Yes, I know, that´s
the same as the c#2 on the f-horn, when done with 12. If you
are used to play the f2 with Bb-1 instead of BB-0, it is
better in pitch, derivating from the 9th harmonic. So be the
f#2 just with B-2.

But Nutcracker We play the whole Nutcacker (nickname)
ballet music upside down.

One of the problems here is which Meinl !!

There are several who manufacture instruments.

Gerhard Meinl manufactures the Hoyer horns

Ewald Meinl manufactures bells for many of the finest makers, including
Alexander.

Ewald is Gerhard's uncle.

I think Paul Navarro was working with Meinl 5 to 7 years ago to develop an
8d replacement flare.  Perhaps this is one of those.  Paul contributes to
this list from time to time, so perhaps he will give better and more specific
 information.

Yes, I did work with Ewald Meinl and do import his bells, including the one
we came up with for the Elkhart 8D replacement flare.

Many professionals use these flares on their 8D's. I have installed them on
approx. 60 Elkhart 8D's for clients.
Unfortunately, they are untimely to get at this time-due to personnel
problems that Ewald is experiencing at his shop.
The order time is taking approx. one year.
Hopefully this will change in the near future.

The player who wrote saying he used a Meinl flare with his Alex 107 could not
likely have been using one of the ones I import because there is a large size
difference between the flare for an 8D and one for an Alex 107.
The ledge between the two flares would certainly create acoustical problems
for a sensitive performer.

One must be mindful that trying different flares on a horn is not as simple
as just making sure that the rings are compatible. There are several
important parameters that need to be met to make sure that, while a certain
flare may
seem to improve a horn, the flare should also be either compatible with the
overall harmonic series of the instrument or a total improvement of the
series, and not just influencing one particular aspect positively while
degrading a
nother aspect at the same time.
