[Hornlist] Season's Greetings!

2006-12-24 Thread Bear Woodson
Hello, Everyone.

I hope all of my Jewish Friends have had a
wonderful and reverent Chanukkah, and that the
Christians will have had a Merry Christmas.

I have been writing my huge "First Symphony",
which I hope will total over an hour long, when all
4 movements are done. It uses the usual "Wood-
winds in 3's", plus 6 Horns, 3 Trumpets, Tuba,
Euphonium, 4 Timpani, 3 Percussionists, Harp
and Strings. It is also somewhat of a Concerto for
Orchestra, as I am deliberately giving Solos to
EVERY wind player (including Second Chair
Players), each string section, etc. I finished the 29-
minute Moderato First Movement in May 2006.
A 4-bar Horn Call Motive, an 8-bar Horn Melody,
and several 6-Horn Choir passages carry the move-
ment, and it already has Solos for most of the other
wind instruments and string sections.

(The "Horn Motive" and "Horn Melody" ARE 2
of the Main Themes in the First Movement, but I
only gave Long Solos to Horns 1, 3 and 5, so far
in the long First Movement. Horns 2, 4 and 6 are
my Lower Ranged Horns, and whereas I gave them
some shorter solos in the Fast Second Movement,
I still owe them Long Solos in the 3rd and 4th
Movements, which I have not yet written.)

At the moment I am in the last few pages of
writing the Fast Second Movement, which brings
it to 11 1/2 minutes, with about another minute to
go. It is an ABA Form, with the two "A" Sections
being like loud, rowdy, barbaric Percussion
Concerti. The "B" Section is a 3-minute long,
happy-go-lucky "Perpetual Motion Piece" as well
as being the world's longest "Retrograde-Inversion
Canon".

I have plans to write schmaltzy melodies, featuring
the Strings in the Slow Third Movement, and the
Fourth Movement will be the World Premiere of
the Thirteenth Category of New Fugue that I have
Invented.

Other than this, my time is preoccupied by health
problems. In the last few years I've had hundreds
of Diabetic Black-Outs. In October 2005 I started
using "Byetta", which is a new medicine that slows
down and stabilizes the liver and pancreas in
Diabetics. It stopped all my Diabetic Black-Outs
for 9 months, but since July 2006 they been back
at the same frequency as before. Each one causes
me to go unconscious for several hours of near-
death Shock from Low Blood Sugar Levels, and
the second day when I wake up, I have no memory
of the Unconscious Day at all. (There was one
earlier today, and two yesterday.) I wanted to send
this message yesterday, but I was a little busy.

All the best to all of you!

Ah, thank you Prof. G! I know now I can go and play that tricky
passage in Three French Carols because I spent a lot of time
practicing my Kopprasch.

I always take the time to read this to my students at their last
lesson before Christmas. It always entertains and educates them.
Thanks so very much for sharing it this evening.

2006-12-24 Thread HORNTRASH
NOW, NOW, NOW, Walt, you have all been the mostestest of good little hornies
this year so here it is:

A VISIT FROM SAINT DENNIS
By Prof. I.M. Gestopftmitscheist

Twas the night before Kopprasch, when all through the house
Not a  hornist  was playing, not even some Strauss;
The Holtons were packed in their cases with care,
In hopes that St. Dennis soon would be there.

The students were nestled all snug in their beds,
While   visions of symphony jobs danced in their heads;
Completing financial aid forms was driving Mamma and me insane,
As scholarships for Junior and Sis were not going to be attained.

With auditions looming for college and schools,
These two "musicians" were acting like fools.
Playing only solos, excerpts, and such,
Their playing was not to be considered, much.

When out on the lawn there arose such a sound,
I sprang from the desk like a deer on a bound!
Away to the window, I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash!

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of midday to objects below,
When what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a gigantic sleigh and eight great-big reindeer!

A distinguished man had his hand on the rein,
I new in a moment that it surely was St. Brain.
More rapid than Al Cass his coursers they came,
And he free buzzed, and shouted, and called them by name:

Now, Alex! now Kruspe! now Conn and Holton!
On, Yamaha! on Geyer! on, Schmid and Lawson!
To the top of the range! to the pedal notes fall!
Now play away! play away! play away all!

As great horn players can do "on the fly,"
When they meet with an excerpt, mount to the sky,
So up to the roof-top the coursers they flew,
With a sleigh full of music, and St. Dennis too.

And then, in an eighth note, I heard on the roof
The puffing and blowing of each little toot.
As I drew in my head, and was futzing around,
Down the chimney came St. Dennis, ready to sound.

He was dressed in his tails, and patent leather shoes,
And he then said to me, "In a minute, great news!"
A bundle of music he had flung on his back,
And in his right hand, a Brazilian made pack.

I stared at his face, and his eyes were afire,
and I knew in his life, there was only one desire,
to take out a horn and play it so well,
that the rest of us mortals could just "go to hell!"

He opened the gig bag and picked up his horn,
like I knew he had done since the day he was born.
He then played the Siegfried with nary a clam,
and all I could think of was "hot damn!"

And this great performance had awakened the kids,
Who came in a'running, and put on the skids.
They were all shaken, scared, and bewildered of that
Since the only horn playing they ever did sounded like crap.

He then played "Till Eulenspiegel" with nary a crack,
And all with perfect rhythm, dynamics and attack.
His beautiful tone was simply amazing,
Not to mention his incredible phrasing.

The kids starting yelling, "HOW CAN WE DO THAT?"
"WE'LL NEVER SUCCEED IF WE PLAY LIKE CRAP!"
And then St. Dennis said, "Please, don't despair.
There is a remedy for all problems, so there."

"My instructions, now, you should perfectly heed,
If you really ever, ever want to succeed."
St. Dennis then reached down into his sack,
And pulled out some music and handed it back.

"There are five fundamentals to playing horn well,
Without support for you air, your playing will smell.
A strong embouchure gives you right notes and range,
Good articulation keeps things from sounding strange."

"You need perfect rhythm, and a very good ear,
As sight reading skills help to give you no fear!
Put it all together and what have you got?
Why, great playing, for sure, and crap it is not!"

"So practice these studies, numbers one through sixty.
Until you have assuredness and consistency.
This time you invest is always well spent,
Especially when you must perform at any event."

"Your excerpts and solos will go like the wind,
Since you know all the techniques to employ within.
A tricky passage is now in your grasp,
Since you have practiced and practiced: KOPPRASCH!!!"

With a wink of his eye and a nod of his head,
"I've got others to tell, tonight," he said.
And then with his horn and his music in hand,
Up the chimney he went, fast as fast can.

He sprang to his sleigh and buzzed to his team,
Away they all flew, as if in a dream.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
"HAPPY KOPPRASCH TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT!"

2006-12-24 Thread Walter E. Lewis

I am truly crushed! Here I've been waiting by my computer with valve
oil to oil the valves of my Alex, and Kopprasch Book on my music
stand turned to Kopprasch #1 awaiting the annual visit from St. Dennis.

Have we all been bad hornists this year? Too many clams? Not enough
practicing Kopprasch #1? Too much bickering about Kruspe or Geyer
wraps or bashing the valves on Holton horns? I had planned on reading
it to my colleagues at my Xmas eve gig in a couple of hours, to get
us in a festive mood,

Alas, I guess we've been bad hornists this year, so we'll have to
work harder next year.

MERRY CHRISTMAS colleagues,

Walt Lewis

It's easy to celebrate near the equator, as they say, "been
there done that." It's the state of mind you bring. Half
the world faces Christmas time in the middle of Summer
anyway.

Christmas tends to bring out the best in a lot of folks.
It's that one time when we stop and think about how we can
live life, not how must of us do face it. It we didn't have
Christmas, we'd have to invent it, just to remind ourselves
that we can treat our fellow man with care, respect, and
common hope for a better world.

Yes, you are right physically, but do mountains or deserts
(face) celebrate X-mas ? Surely not. It is the people
celebrating. So you were wrong speaking of half of the world
facing X-mas south of the equator.

RE: [Hornlist] Happy Holidays

2006-12-24 Thread hans
They celebrate X-mas just with Bikini, Santa beard &
jelly-bag-cap, giant crystal X-mas fir & candles as
everywhere. It is a big sale event, nothing left from the
original spirit, be it Christian or old nordic Jul.
Jingele-belle-jongele-belle & kitsch Holy Night; but people
feed themselves fat like pigs & drink like a squadron of
mercenaries. This in regards of our countrymen holidaying
there. But, perhaps, the local people, if they are Christian
& modest to poor, well, they might celebrate Christmas as it
was intended to be, an intimate religious family
celebration, going to the mid night mass in the small
community church.

I do speak for one country around the equator, where I have
been right until few days ago & haver been there the same
period two years ago. But they celebrate very modestly in
Thailand, except at the crowded tourist places - to avoid
anyway. But I can imagine, singles travelling to these
destinations, will enjoy X-mas on the beach, at the
restaurants or in the mas parlors. (Oooops)
Mai-pen-arai, sanug-sanug.

Of Christmas in different climes,

Even Irving Berlin, in the opening to "White Christmas" had a little fun
with the subject,

The sun is shining
The grass is green
The orange and palm trees sway.
I've never seen such a day
In Beverly Hills LA.
But it's December the 24th
And I am longing to be up North.

I'm dreaming of a White Christmas. . .

Best wishes to you, Hans, and to all. But I wonder what they can
celebrate at the equator...

RE: [Hornlist] Happy Holidays

2006-12-24 Thread Daniel Canarutto

Coincidentally, X-mas falls near to the calendarian end of
the year, even nearer to the solstice, which might give it a
reason for not-Christians also to celebrate, that days are
getting longer again, but it is opposite at the other
(dawn) side of the globe, where they celebrate, that it is
getting cooler again. So let everybody celebrate when & how
& for whatever reason they do.

Best wishes to you, Hans, and to all. But I wonder what they can

And the same to you!

Buon Natale and Merry Christmas! Unfortunately, I am NEVER Politically
Correct!

RE: [Hornlist] Happy Holidays

2006-12-24 Thread hans
You mean: "Happy XXX-Business-mas" ?? O.K.. You are right.

If all people around the world would respect each other,
would respect what others believe, how they are, how they
celebrate, admire the wonders of "life", all would be fine,
perhaps not as easy as some of us might think & definitely
less profitable, but peaceful anyway. And life is a unique
gift for a one time, a gift which should never be harmed by
nobody. Life is the most valuable for every individual
alive.

Coincidentally, X-mas falls near to the calendarian end of
the year, even nearer to the solstice, which might give it a
reason for not-Christians also to celebrate, that days are
getting longer again, but it is opposite at the other
(dawn) side of the globe, where they celebrate, that it is

& for whatever reason they do.

Buone Feste, Happy Holidays or just Happy Days , good health
& success & peace for the year to come.
