[Hornlist] Trills and some good tongue action.

2007-01-12 Thread matthew scheffelman
If one thinks they are doing nothing with the tongue,
that is most likely a good thing, but one would be
very mistaken. The mechanics of the horn (and being
able to explain them) are just as important as pages
and pages of analogies those analogies are great
for many studentsI suprise myself with the new
ones I come up with everyday.

Be careful with tricks, magic, smokesceens and snake
oil

Re: [Hornlist] low horn solo

2007-01-12 Thread Jay Anderson

I found these dauprat concertos at the rochester library page:
http://groucho.lib.rochester.edu/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?v1=12&ti=1,12&Search%5FArg=horn%20concerto&Search%5FCode=FT%2A&CNT=50&PID=4055&SEQ=20070112233542&SID=4

I couldn't find anywhere to buy them but it looks like the sibley
library has a scanning services for rare scores like this:
http://www.esm.rochester.edu/sibley/?page=request I'd certainly be
interested to look at it. They already have some old dauprat etudes
scanned: https://urresearch.rochester.edu/handle/1802/967 Pretty neat!

Re: [Hornlist] Stiff lips

2007-01-12 Thread billbamberg
I had a similar problem with the new Blistex Lip Infusion. I suspect
the chemicals they use were originally used to give old, floppy leather
lots of body. Since it is absorbed into the lips, it takes a long time
before playing sensitivity returns.

Subject: [Hornlist] Stiff lips

Hi all!
Almost everything was said in this matter. But let me tell what
happened

to me a few years ago. I had a problem similar as described by
Ron. The lips were just stiff, didn't vibrate at all. They were like
paralized. I coud not buzz without the mouthpiece. Before a concert I
had

to do a lot of warmup and after a little break it was stiff again.
Until I found the reason. I have had a blister on my lip some time
before,

which happens very rarely to me. So I tried a natural medicine. I put
"Propolis", some kind of stuff which bees produce to keep their homes
clean. You get it in shops where they sell honey, beewax, etc. Maybe
it
was just the alcohol in this propolis or propolis itself, I don't
know. I

found out about it because I tried to put it on my lips later on, and
bang, the stiff lip problem was there again. This is a good medicine
when
used in small doses with lot of water, but never put it on the lips as
it

is.
So just think about what you have done before you got the stiff lips.
It
must not necessarily be overdoing the lips. It can be a chemical
reason.

Best wishes to you and hope you find out what it was.

Matthew,

What are you doing with your tongue on a lip trill?

Ron

Hi,
I know some people are gong to reply with things they do with their
tongues for lip trills, but I don't do anything with mine and i don't
teach it. All of my high school students can lip trill, by the way.
There is a trick to it, which i have explained before. Unfortunately,
i don't have time to go into it now, I'm leaving for the Santa
barbara horn weekend.

RE: [Hornlist] Re: Stiff Lips

2007-01-12 Thread hans
The best therapy for those who suffer of stiff lips
resulting from excessive high playing
Is going back to the source:

All the high register must be acquired step by step in a
lengthy process.
And - the depper you can go in the bass region, the higher
you might climb up into the stratosphere.
But all slowly, very slowly, step by step.

O.k., if one is not exposed to daily professional playing,
this person might suffer if there is a harder gig (e.g.
ballet music) of a few days.
This happen to many players who mainly teach only.

It also happens to many amateur players if they are exposed
to excessive playing within a certain short period of few
days,
special again if they play music to which they are exposed
rarely (Bach, Haendel, Wagner, Strauss, Tchaikovsky ballet,
etc.).

What is the source for their stiffness ? Not the missing
warm-down exercises, no, even they are useful,
but inadequate preparation during their horn study, by
skipping (old fashion) necessary steps.

Yes, Alon, I agree, open throat is most important for
relaxed playing.
If pressure, only the "necessary" pressure to seal
mouthpiecerim with the lips,
BUT NEVER PRESSURE to get the high notes out. NO TOGETHER
PRESSURE of the lips,
squeezing any lip opening to near zero. This false technique
consumes too much energy.
Also trying compensating the lack of overtones with more air
(energy) when playing the Bb-side excessively,
will result in very stiff lips. It can be heard in the sound
(zssscccrscscscschhh).
It becomes all worse on the high F descant.

To all with the stiff lip problem:
Reduce your ambition, play relaxed (mentally relaxed also,
but concentrated),
Play a wider bore mouthpiece, a thin rim (prevents pressure
as it would hurt),
Play on the F-side where you can be responsible.

I believe that one of the most relaxing exercise to do is
just to play low long notes from G right under the stuff and
down to pedal C , in pianissimo. While playing , keep your
throat open and play through your vocal cords - the air
should be " static " , or , should I say , do not blow
through the instrument , Just imagine that you are a Bass
singer .
Watch for the beginnings of the notes - they do point out
how open your throat is .
As for further advice of how not to get stiff lips - every
practice session which includes a massive or very high
playing , should be done in intervals , and you really have
to clear some time for it . A five minutes practice sequence
can destroy you , if you would not take the break you need
(some times the time of practice is equal to relaxation
time!!) you may destroy yourself .
There are some good sources regarding this issue :The book
"Broken embouchure " by Lucinda Lewis" and some heavy
routine exercises (the most of them DO require intervals) -
my favorite is Josef Singers .
take care -

Sorry,

King has it. Parable no.V is for carillon, and is easy to find by Googling for
other sources.
