[Hornlist] Custom slide for 70's Alex
When I raised the issue with my repair person, he said he would want to use parts from Alexander and that, since these weren't parts he stocked normally, I might as well have them make the entire thing. I don't know what is unique or not here and whether sound, appearance, or both are at issue. -S- Steve, go see Randy Ulmer in Joysey. Email me offlist if you need the contact info. He would be able to fabricate the slide you want. Alex tubing is 12mm and standard US tubing is 11.89mm. The proper tubing can be purchased here in the US but not many shops have it on the shelf. [Hornlist] Horn Quartet Album
I just bought a horn quartet album on ebay. Members of the Chicago Symphony. It's got Christopher Lauba, Paul Binstock, Wayne Barrington, Robert Wirth and Frank Brouk (presently solo horn) No date. Anyone know when this was the horn section? A closer reading of the back seems to indicate that the are not all members of CSO. Lauba was Professor of Music in Puerto Rico, Wirth has played in Minneapolis six seasons; Binstock teaches music in Roseville Minnesota. Maybe only Barrington and Brouk are CSO? ___ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org

[Hornlist] Hindemith Horn Concerto (1949) , Question
On the Dennis Brain recording of the Hindemith Concerto ( Philharmonia, Sawallisch), first movement , last measure, Dennis plays a 16th triplet, while my piano score and part has straight 16ths printed. Anything I am missing from the main score? I will see the full score in a couple of months, but I was wondering if this was either an oversight on Dennis's part, or a misprint. It sounds great with the triplet, I even might do it no matter what, but I was curious to hear anyone with some facts. Matthew Scheffelman Ready for the edge of your seat? RE: [Hornlist] Kuhn Triple
I recently tried Jerome Ashby's old Kuhn 393 and absolutely loved it. I can't compare it to any of the instruments you mentioned as I haven't played on the Schmid and the Alex and Paxman haven't touched my lips in over a decade. The Kuhn had a different sound and feel than any Geyer-based wrap (I know...kind of hard to do a Geyer with a triple, but you get my point) instrument I've ever tried. While it was light for a triple, I wouldn't classify it as a lightweight horn. As for the sound, it was very substantial - more than I expected. I play a Lawson Fourier normally and I didn't give up much in the way of sheer power trying the triple. Ultimately, the ONLY reason I didn't buy it was simply because I don't see myself needing the triple (I played on a Yamaha triple for a couple of years and never really used the High F side for anything but novelty and the F# entrance in the Nutcracker) and the mass involved and the new hand arrangement wasn't worth it to me. I'm VERY seriously considering a new Kuhn 293 right now based on my positive recent experiences with the Kuhn triple though. Never, I think. Leuba was principal with the CSO for a couple of seasons, under Reiner I believe; Brouk, who had an absolutely gorgeous sound, took over principal for a season or two, from the section, but didn't seek it, Wayne Barrington played 3rd, I believe, for some time--he played, to my recollection, a Conn 28D--the second horn through all of this was Wedgewood, who is not listed.
