[Hornlist] Re: Julius Watkins - was: anyone ever heard this?
Getting back to my email after a couple weeks, I see that my friend Peter has offered some comments on my friend Patrick's thesis on Julius Watkins: JULIUS WATKINS AND THE EVOLUTION OF THE JAZZ FRENCH HORN GENRE http://etd.fcla.edu/UF/UFE0012940/smith_p.pdf I was lucky enough to have been given a copy of the thesis soon after it was completed, and I'd like to echo Peter's closing remarks. He was more critical than I would have been, but concluded that on balance, you really ought to take the time to check it out. I agree. The thesis is a valuable contribution to the tiny literature on the horn in jazz. And it works on other levels as well. It's good to have another biographical study of a lesser known jazz musician (we know lots about the big names, too little about everyone else). It's also important to be reminded how powerfully racism affected the careers of even the most gifted black musicians of the day. My parents and Mr. Barrows are smiling remembering our discussions of this record, especially the Heiden Sonata. As I have come to learn, advocacy is one thing, dogma is another. Yet, there is much to be learned from diversity and heterogeneity. Re: [Hornlist] Auf dem strom
William Barnewitz has a nice album called Long Road Home. It has this piece. I got it on I-tunes. He plays beautifully. A search on I-tunes comes up with 12 different recordings. At 99 cents a pop, you could have 9 versions. Three of the recordings require you to buy the entire album. My sons got me an I-Pod for Christmas. I think I am going to OD on I-tunes. Re: [Hornlist] Auf dem strom
Alas, Yes. The original Auf dem Strom calls for horn in E. However there are versions with the work transcribed down a half step to E Flat, and down a whole step to the key of D. And I have heard of an arrangement in the Key of C, to accomodate a low voice. Thus I would not be surprised if a recording has been made in one of the lower keys. That reminds me, based on the text it seems natural that the voice should be a tenor. However recordings by sopranos, anr known. Margo Stagliano, for instance. Some of the recordings on I-tunes are with male voices. I like the sound. Perhaps they are in the key you are looking for. Re: [Hornlist] Auf dem strom
DalleyHN wrote: That reminds me, based on the text it seems natural that the voice should be a tenor. Good call! Auf dem Strom was originally written for a tenor, specifically Ludwig Tietze, who sang it at its premier on March 26, 1828 with Schubert himself at the piano and J.R. Lewy performing the horn part, probably on a two-valve (possibly three-valve) horn. A valved horn pitched in E would have none of the cross-fingering problems that vex an F horn player transposing the part. I've played this piece both in E as well as D horn to accommodate the range of specific singers. The D transposition is less taxing endurance-wise (Schubert is very stingy with rests), but does little to simplify the fingering.
