RE: [Hornlist] Blitz cloth for unlacquered brass?

2008-05-19 Thread hans
Once the horn is polished, use a micro fibre cloth
(household article available in super markets for 2-4 $
double pack) to polish fingerprints away so the shine lasts
much much longer. Much better than polishing & polishing &
abrasing & abrasing until too much !

Hi everyone

I need a tip on polishing up an un lacquered horn. Anyone
know where I can get what they used to call a "blitz cloth"
that works? I use Brasso for extreme cases, but there must
be something else out there in this day and age.

Incidently, someone turned me on to Hetman ultra slide

[Hornlist] DSO Konzertstuck

2008-05-19 Thread Reese Farnell
I attended the Saturday concert, and not only was the konzertstuck
incredible, but the horn section in Bruckner 7 in the second half was
powerful and easily balanced the high trumpets. Quite a concert for a
hornist.

RANT MODE|ON

I along with some friends attended the Friday performance on Konzerstuck.
At the end about 1/4 to 1/3 of the house gave a standing ovation. The rest
of the crowd would not be budged from their chairs. Had this been a pianist
or a violinist or perhaps a soprano, the whole house would have been on its
feet.

Afterwards well mulled this over,

1. Dallas audiences are undereducated.
2. The four horn ensemble was not imported artists, but locals who don't
deserve such treatment.

We enjoyed it anyway, and the audience paid to hear the Konzerstuck, even if
they didn't know what they were hearing.

Even better is MAAS brass polish; it is not as abrasive as Simichrome. You

You can get Blitz metal polishing cloths at practically any music
store. I recommend Simichrome, though, if you're doing extensive
polishing. Ken Pope sells it.

Standard orchestral scoring notation (I used / instead of space as a
separator, though).

This text shamelessly stolen from the Westminster Music Library website:

Orchestration is shown by grouping instruments together as they would
normally appear in the score:

wind/brass/percussion/strings/continuo.

Example:
Symphony no. 3, op. 55, E flat major 'Eroica'
Scoring: FS 3200 T Str Duration: 48'-52' Publisher: Breitkopf

The entry would indicate that:

* a full score was included in the set
* the instrumentation consisted of:
  o two flutes,
  o two oboes,
  o two clarinets,
  o two bassoons,
  o three horns,
  o two trumpets,
  o no trombones or tuba,
  o timpani
  o strings.

Non-standard woodwind instruments are denoted by an asterisk (*) before
the number of instruments, while non-standard brass instruments are
listed separately at the end of the sequence.
Tuned percussion, harps and keyboard instruments required are listed
separately after the percussion.

Example:
Romeo and Juliet : ballet. Suite no. 1, op. 64a
Scoring: FS *3*3*3*3 4331 T Perc Xyl Bells Hp Pf Str Sax Duration: 27'
Publisher: Kalmus

This entry indicates that a full score is included in the set and that
in addition to the basic double woodwind a piccolo, cor anglais, bass
clarinet and contrabassoon are required. The brass section includes four
horns, three trumpets, three trombones, one tuba and one saxophone. In
addition to the timpani and untuned percussion a xylophone, bells, one
harp and one piano are required.

Any optional instruments are placed in brackets.

The usual breakdown of strings would be violin I, violin II, viola,
cello and double bass. The absence of any of these would be noted (e.g.
no vla).

Following review is from the Dallas, TX Morning Fishwrap.

After reviewer discussion of the Bruckner he closes with.

"The program opened with as different a piece as could be imagined,
Schumann's *Konzertstück* for four horns and orchestra. Gregory Hustis,
Nicole Cash, Haley Hoops and Paul Capehart delivered playing by turns
exhilarating, boldly sculpted and extruded in golden strands of tone. If
this wouldn't put a smile on your face, nothing would."

There are performances tonight and Saturday night at the Meyerson Symphony
Hall.

As i aside I was surprised to discover there are six horn parts to the
*Konzertstück.
