[Hornlist] NHR: NHR posts and complaints about subject lines.
Apologies for not editing the subject earlier but I have to note that the people who were getting cranky about subjects not reading "NHR" didn't change it themselves either. Please let's have some grace on the list. Then there is the other brass player who is overweight and dealing with empasima. He came flying on the stage gasping for breath. He almost knocked me out of my chair as he dove for a seat. After my initial shock I looked at him, saw his bright red face and decided it was about time to call 9-1-1 (emergency services). Fortunately, the lad did recover. Sorry - I derailed the conversation with my NHR reply... See, around my area, (Washington DC) there are a LOT of service bands men and women. A large portion of them are Marines (United States Marine Corps - either from Quantico or 8th and I/President's Own). Of course, the reason I made that comment - having a bona fide Marine in the section would certainly deter all but the densest of violists (is that redundant?) from striking back. Cheers! Re: [Hornlist] bumping section mates
Very able analyses so far, with creative thoughts for acts of retribution designed to eliminate repetition of the untoward event. It would be instructional to build an anecdotal record of such incidents, including contributory factors. A veteran of many tight pits, I have been both bumper and bumpee from time to time, though almost never while playing. Experience dictates that it is best to avoid moving about - emptying your horn, for instance - while the person next to you is working. But perhaps experiencing this kind of incident is how some folks get the experience and raise their consciousness. So: - emptying your horn - adjusting your chair - turning a page - checking your cell phone - wiggling into the pit late, after the playing begins - turning around to tell the trumpet player behind you to stop rattling his valves - getting hit by a trombone slide (not kidding - it happened, while I was playing) - ? Hi Martin, Yes, I was joking, but as Dave said, "Hitting a horn, or a wind player while the instrument is on the chops, is a serious, serious thing." - you can't do it and people who do have be taught in the strongest possible terms that it's not acceptable, you've got to be more careful. >> I can't remember the last time I was bumped by a section mate, and I have no recollection of ever bumping someone. So a few nights ago, warming up, I feel this jolt to my face, and its the horn player to my right, just casually bumping me when I have the horn on my face. WTF !!<< I can't tell you the number of times I've been bumped, but never in a "serious" group. In some settings, it's almost inevitable, such as in marching band or corps. In a pit, in cramped quarters, it's highly likely. But in a good sized rehearsal room or on a stage, everyone should take care and no accidents should happen. I've never had a chipped tooth, but have had a seriously impaired embouchure, and sore gums and teeth. Really, would one step on a bow and just say "sorry"? Would one close a door on a percussionist's hand and expect to brush it off? Hitting a horn, or a wind player while the instrument is on the chops, is a serious, serious thing. -- Regards, Dave Weiner Brass Arts Unlimited ___ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org
