[Hornlist] Dauprat Concerto No. 2

2009-08-28 Thread Adam Black

This is a piece I am currently trying to learn, but unfortunately it does seem
to be notable for its lack of performance in general. I woonder if anyone knows
of or has a recording of it?
Thanks,

RE: [Hornlist] Baroque CD tips

2009-05-06 Thread Adam Black

Dear Robson,

I think the Tuckwell album is the pick of them, but you could also look at
these:

1. J Haydn and M Haydn - Horn Concertos (Dale Clevenger) [Has both J Haydn
concertos and the M Haydn Concertino]

2. Horn Concertos (Hector McDonald) [Has the JHaydn Concerto No.1 and concertos
by Telemann, Forster and Teyber]

3. Perspectives (Hermann Baumann) [ As well as some modern works, including the
Gliere, it also contains the Weber concertino, Leopold Mozart Sinfonia da
caccia, and the Telemann concerto]. A good compendium of Baumann's playing.

Hope this helps,

Adam

2009-05-05 Thread Adam Black

Hi Robson,

Barry Tuckwell has a double CD called simply, "Horn Concertos". It is I think
probably the best overall selection around of what you are looking for. It
includes 4 concertos by Stich (Punto), along with concertos by Michael and
Josef Haydn, Leopold Mozart, Forster, Telemann, Weber and Cherubini. You should
be able to find it on amazon.

Cheers,

2008-08-31 Thread Adam Black

Dear fellow hornists,
I am preparing to play this piece with some string colleagues. In the 7th bar
of the first mvt (and recurring later), there is a run of 4 semiquavers (D, C,
D, Eflat), leading to a top line F to finish. I try to play this decrescendo
(fading off on the F). However, whenever I do this, I continue to get an "airy"
sound on the note. Does anyone know of any exercise or technique that might
help?
Thanks,

I guess my point is that even Nadal and Federer miss sometimes. It is
unrealistic to expect them to NEVER miss. Us struggling amateur hornists
obviously miss a lot more often than the professionals. As human beings in any
endeavour, we do aim for perfection - that is after all, what keeps us
improving. But, we never quite get there, do we?

RE: [Hornlist] NY Times horn feature

2008-08-13 Thread Adam Black

Sent one in today:
Here's a copy (don't know if it will be published)
Adam Black

Dear Editor,
I write in response to the withering attack on horn playing launched by Mr.
Kozinn, in his article on the French horn (8/12/08). In it, he criticises a
number of the current top players in the profession, as being not up to
scartch. Well Mr. Kozinn, if they can't play the instrument to a standard
acceptable to you, what is the answer? Presumably we should just remove it from
the orchestra, or "play safe" and replace it with a tenor/alto horn. No, the
sound won't be as wonderful, but it will be "safe", which is after all what you
seem to want. In a similar manner, perhaps we could try to stop high
performance gymnasts or ice-skaters from falling over during multiple
somersaults, by only doing one instead. Motor car racing drivers should be made
to drive at under 50 mph, to reduce crashes. Mr. Kozinn I think misses the
point - anything worth having is often difficult and carries risk. That is the
nature of the horn. But when it comes off, isn't it a sound put on earth by God
himself? And yes, Mr. Kozinn, I am an amateur horn player. Unlike those you
mention in your article, I will never play with a symphony orchestra, but I do
understand some of what they face. For some reason, you seem to suggest that
horn players have no right to complain about your criticism. Presumably that is
because we may be the one group who fully understand your unjustified criticism
for what it is, ignorance.

[Hornlist] Photos

2008-08-03 Thread Adam Black

Sorry folk,
The last message didn't load the photos properly. I tried to do so separately,
but the file size is too big. I have instead attached a link to the web page
below. I must say, that even though it is an Australian website, it does remind
me a lot of the chinese ones selling horns. "Normally retails for $3000" (I
don't think so!)

PS I wonder if a red horn is what us middle-aged men with widening girth could
buy instead of the red sports car?

[Hornlist] Technicolour

2008-08-03 Thread Adam Black

Hey folks,
Forget about technicolour mpc's - why notthe whole horn instead? I have
attached info from a website my wife came across recently (and no - I don't
know the people who run the company, and this is not a sales pitch)! Anyway, it
got a smile on to some faces at our place.

This beautiful STERLING SFR-300RD red double french horn is the perfect choice
for a student or intermediate player. This horn is brand new and has never been
played.
The double horn combines two instruments into a single frame: the original horn
in F, and a second, higher horn keyed in B-flat. By using a fourth valve
(operated by the thumb), the horn player can quickly switch from the deep, warm
tones of the F horn to the higher, brighter tones of the B-flat horn.
Its conical bore is largely responsible for its characteristic tone, often
described as "mellow". This model horn has accurate intonation and comfortable,
quick response. The SFR-300 is a Kruspe style horn with medium-large throat for
moderate resistance to air flow.
Complete with a hard, canvas-finish carry case, cleaning cloth and mouthpiece,
this unique french horn is a great instrument. Great for the student or
intermediate player, or just as someting different, this horn is a fantastic
buy!
These double french horns usually sell for upwards of $3000 in retail stores.

A bit of an obscure one -
does anyone know of a recording of the von Schacht Quartet No. 94 for horn,
violin, viola and cello? Has anyone played it before and have any tips? The

RE: [Hornlist] Slow movement of Haydn _Trumpet_ Concerto for French Horn

2008-07-23 Thread Adam Black

Hi Steve,
I have just had a look at this part - it does look well suited for the horn.
However, I'm confused by your "up a step / horn in C" stuff, and what you've
transposed to what. Can we make it simpler, and say - what do you do to the
written part for B flat trumpet - just take it up one step? (after all,
wouldn't a horn in C part move a B flat part down a step?) I"M SO CONFUSED!!!

this must be for horn in E. This is the first time I have seen this. Can anyone
fill me in on the origins?

[Hornlist] Carter Horn Concerto

2007-11-21 Thread Adam Black

To all,
I haven't heard this piece, but it seems that it has a rather extreme range,
only playable by elite players. One thing I do note is that there now seems to
be a competition of sorts amongst modern composers to write higher and higher
notes - who can play the highest, who writes the hardest to play concerto etc.
Mozart I think we all agree, wrote horn music that cannot be described in any
other way than beautiful. He made the best use of the horn's qualities. Even
Strauss, in my all-time favourite piece of music, his first horn concerto, only
wrote up to a written B flat. In the words of my teacher (a professional
player), composers now often forget about "writing for the horn", and just what
horn music is. Maybe we need to get away from contests, and get back to beauty
(as I say - this is definitely not a criticism of Carter per se, as I haven't
heard the piece - just a discussion on what I see as a trend). For amateur
players, such as myself, it is difficult to continually feel "excluded" from
new works.

[Hornlist] Performance Anxiety

2006-08-22 Thread Adam Black

Dear Fellow List Members,
Thanks for all the input to this issue - I think I now have a few strategies
to try, and see how things go. Unfortunately, beta blockers aren't one of
them; for me at any rate. If I think anxiety gets my chest tight, just wait
until propanolol meets my asthma!

[Hornlist] Performance Anxiety

2006-08-20 Thread Adam Black

Dear All,
I know that this is a commonly discussed subject, and I have read
a fair bit about it (including visualisation etc). However, although all of
this helps, the problem remains a persistent one for me. What is not
discussed is what to do during a performance, once the anxiety demon rears
its head. When this happens for me, I get tight in the chest, and my heart
rate increases - as a result, my air flow etc ibecomes limited, and
performance gets worse (for something I can play perfectly well during
rehearsal). As a result, anxiety levels only increase, and the problem gets
worse.
What I am keen on getting help with, is whether anyone has any
strategies for controlling the problem ONCE IT HAS OCCURRED, as despite all
my best efforts at slowing my breathing and telling myself that it is just
the anxiety, and not my horn playing per se; the problem will then persist
for the rest of the performance.

   Any suggestions?
Thanks, Adam Black (Adelaide, Australia)

[Hornlist] Schumann - Stucke im Volkston (Pieces in Folkstyle)

2006-02-20 Thread Adam Black
Does anyone know how to access this music in horn transcription? I forget
the publisher, but I have seen it, as part of an album of Schumann pieces
for horn, including his fantasy pieces, and (?) one other as well;
transcribed for horn. I have looked for this "Schumann Album" since, via the
net, and music publishers, with no success; nor have I found the horn
transcription of the folkstyle pieces published separately. Can anyone be of
any help?

You could visit Wilhelm Lanzky-Otto´s memorial site, there you
can find cadenzas for 3rd and 4th concertos and concert rondo.

http://hem.passagen.se/lanzky/

Altogether it´s a great site, don´t forget to listen the sound
samples!

What particular Mozart concerto you are interested most ? I
could scan the relevant pages from my book "Das Horn bei
Mozart" (sold out since years) & send them to you as
attachement, perhaps. Just a friendship service not
violating any rights.

Dear Prof Pizka,
Thanks for your comments - I, however, am just a "returnee"
to playing, after a 25 year absence; with still, limited
musical ability, and not a very good ear. I am just after
something relatively simple to play, to start with, and
build up from there. I do, by the way, have an original set
of the concertos (just without cadenzas included). I do
respect the rights of composers / arrangers, and am, as you
suggest, building up a library of my own ( original copies
) music pieces.
Thanks, Adam

Listen carefully to the preferred Mozart recordings & write
out the cadenza, write it within regular measure with
fermatas & caesuras. That´s the way I did. It helps much
understanding the music.

What do you think, that soloists would just sell their
cadenzas for a few cents, with all the administration
involved, while you would not even spend the few bucks for a
set of the Mozart horn concertos ?? Ridiculous ! Spend less
on personal entettainment to save up for your private
library of the most important pieces, as we (the elder) did.

You have a cheaper but time involving solution: write your
own cadenza, as did most soloists.

Welcome back!

A quick Google found lots of interesting reading, most of which says the
difference isn't one with which most of us need be concerned. Here's a
link:

http://www.google.com/search?q=Geyer+vs+Kruspe+wrapped+horns

I just pasted the text from your message right into Google.

Just to play devil's advocate, is there a reason you need a different horn?
Perhaps having the horn you already own serviced is sufficient.
