[Hornlist] Holtons

2009-03-26 Thread Ashley Grothe

My German teacher and I were conversing and I found out she plays horn. She
told me that a friend had given her a horn and she knew it was a Holton. We
determined it is a Holton 177. I play on a Holton 179. We looked the specs up
online and it does not seem to have any differances. Does anyone know what they
might be?

Thanks

[Hornlist] Mouthpieces

2009-01-26 Thread Ashley Grothe

I just bought a new french horn mpc that I am really fond of. I don't know the
exact specs, but it has a flat paxman rim and a b14 moosewood cup. I also play
trumpet and was wondering if anyone knew of a trumpet mouthpiece that would be
similar to my horn mpc.
I know those are really vague specs, sorry.

Thanks in advance!

[Hornlist] Rotor Valves

2008-12-12 Thread Ashley Grothe

I have a slight problem with my rotor valves...My second valve has a clicking
noise and has had it for a while. I am not too concerned about it so I have
just left it alone. However, as of late my first, third, and trigger have been
slow and sticky. My third valve makes like a grinding noise when it is
pressed.Like I said, I am not really concerned about the second valve, but if
anyone has encountered this problem and knows how to fix it that would be
great. I do want to fix my other three since it is actually hindering the
playing. I know I will probably have to take it into a shop, but I am hesitant
because I've had bad luck with them (Yeah, they get the job done but they also
add some dents and/or scratches to it!) I was just wondering if anyone knew
what might be wrong and/or how to fix it...(and yes, I do oil it
regularly...)Thanks in advanceAshleyPSIf it matters I have a Holton Farkas
179...

[Hornlist] Worship Band

2008-07-12 Thread Ashley Grothe

I attend a smaller, more conservative church and the youth there are trying to
bring some new thing to the services to spice things up. We really want to have
a worship band that includes all of our music playing youth. I looked in a
couple places, but could not quite find what I was looking for in music. I was
wondering if anyone out there might have a solution...

We are looking for well known and modern Christian (anyone know Casting
Crowns?) rather than hymnesque pieces. And our instrumentation would be a set
player, piano, trombone, horn, trumpet, bass guitar, and accoustic guitar.

I know this is really specific, but that is probably why I am struggling to
find something. Google only goes so far... *sigh*

I would really appreciate any help!
Thanks!

[Hornlist] Quintet Music

2008-06-16 Thread Ashley Grothe
A friend of mine is leading a brass quintet in our school. We are looking for
some music and don't really know where to head. I really want to do a jazzy
piece. Also, if anyone knows where to get Rakes of Mallow that would be
exciting (especially if it comes in quintet form!) If anyone has any
recommendations of where to look or of pieces to try I'd really appreciate it.

RE: [Hornlist] An unusual response

2008-06-14 Thread Ashley Grothe
I tried taking up trombone for a while as well, however I had to opposite
happen. My french horn suffered. This is interesting... Anyone else have the
same result or am I just weird..?

[EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Hornlist] An unusual response In order to
clear the room of flies and better understand its mysteries, I have
recently taken up the trombone. A most surprising response, I find that
after a short trombone session, my horn playing is significantly improved.
My tone is better, my high notes are clearer. This puzzles me. But as
I'm only a Beginner, no change to the number of flies. Any comments?

let you know that Knopf finally has a website listing their available
instruments. http://www.knopf-horn.de/ It's in German. No English yet,
apparently. Click Instrumente to see the instruments. It looks like
they've added a Bb/F descant horn to their lineup, in addition to Knopf and
Kruspe-wrap doubles, one compensating double, and a single Bb with stopping
 valve. Richard in Seattle

[Hornlist] Music

2008-06-06 Thread Ashley Grothe
I have a french horn friend who gave me a burnt CD of a bunch of horn pieces
(solos, duets, choirs, etc.). It was unmarked and he had it forever (along with
SEVERAL french horn disks) so he didn't remember for sure where it came from.
On it was a recording of Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, but played by horns and
couple other back-up instruments. I found a video of what appears to be the
same arrangement (or maybe group, i don't know) on youtube
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSXvqRXaJ0M) I was just wondering if anyone
knew where I might be able to find a copy of sheet music for this piece.
I know this is really vague, and unlikely to turn anything up, but I wondered
if anyone else out there knew what I was talking about and could help me out. I
wish I had more information, sorry.

[Hornlist] Wooden Mpc

2008-05-29 Thread Ashley Grothe
I am looking for a new mouthpiece to try. I don't really know what kind I want,
but am leaning toward a wooden one. I was wondering if there was anyway to look
at one before taking the dive and purchasing one then deciding it doesn't work
for me...
