Re: [Hornlist] about air support
Neuro, How I view "air support" is simply the concept of maintaining the air flow required to play the horn. :D Simple? Yes? I have been told its like compressing the air, and a "firm midsection" my greatest success has been in following a few steps. 1. Allow the inhalation to be natural and unobstructed. 2. Have a smooth change at the apex of the breath (with no interruption from the throat) 3. Maintain an constant stream of air that isn't being hacked apart from our midsection. Let the tounge articulate not the throat and gut It seems to work for me, I used to play with "poor support" where every note was supported, but nothing supported the space between the notes. Re: [Hornlist] Mouthpiece buzzing
I can second the concept Of sing and buzz. This summer working with Fergus McWilliam he pushed a concept of his the McWilliam four step... you sing it, intonation pitch and everything correct. After one masters that you whistle (or do the blowing thing that those who cant whistle do =P.) Same rules apply. Flowed by buzzing it. same rules Than we add the horn to the mouthpiece and buzz it like we whistled it like we sung it, and believe me, you know instantly and we watched person after person prove the theory. It works. It was like Fergus told me, "that little hole, is your portal to another world" I support buzzing! Re: [Hornlist] What should I be doing in the practice room?
Hi there, I will as always offer my two cents. I have recently acquired the Randy Gardner: Mastering the horns low register, and it has had great pay off for my low horn chops. A bit of my playing, in the past I have always sat in a high horn position, my first year in university I found myself sitting fourth horn, a new a frightening world, and I for the best of the expression, got by. I would seriously recommend picking up Randy Gardner's book, it was recommend in a masterclass I attended with Jamie Sommerville and a keen student always looking to learn that I am bought it promptly. The book takes you through embouchure formation exercises, dealing with the break, adds a sense of organization to how to deal with the break and many many many exercises that help. He then takes standard low horn excerpts (the orchestral payoff) and breaks them down with techniques and tips. They are really small lessons with Randy Gardner and they work! Consider me passing on a recommendation... and of course... scales (with a metronome) and as far as ensemble playing goes, find a colleague(s) and play what ever you can (though I fear i just started a debate on ensemble skills vs chamber playing I believe they both use interchangeable skills... the best section I played in were just as strong as a horn quartet as the horn "section"." here is the sumitove version PLAY THE HORN! Re: [Hornlist] RE:Help With Practice Management
Well said, and Mathew (me) will add my two cents. I was fortunate enough to attend and participate in a series of masterclasses with Berlin Philharmonic horn player Fergus McWilliam. One thing that he had mentioned to the group of us was, "focus on the music and the technique will fall into your lap." I took this at face value and began to approach works in this sense, as opposed to ok, section a will need some technical work, ok section b is going to need some of this and that. I still use this approach but always in musical context, Dukas was never meant to sound like kopprasch. On top of that Fergus placed lots of stress into feeling very relaxed and natural while playing, not forcing to stay open or what not, but just how does one sing it and to replicate that into the horn. Long story short, use music as a tool to improve, but don't forget about scales and the fundamentals of your playing, with out that you may not like what falls into your lap in the end. ps. My day is warm up/fundamental work ie. scales, arpeggios, ATTACKS! , long tones, colours (vibrato etc) and flexibility. My second session I work lip trills high and low range, some etude action and a slight touch on excerpts. The final session is dedicated to Music and excerpts. Mat On 7/1/07, matthew scheffelman <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Valerie, You listed all the different things you practice. You put "repertoire" last. Most other instruments use a series of musical pieces to help build ones level, not just etudes and excercies . Learning trills is not such a big deal on most instruments. Now that I think about it, it is not that important on horn either. A common question among young pianists is "what sonata/concerto are you playing" as a help to know what level they are at. I would consider for you a music approach, now that you have the technique somewhat down. Put music first and you will have no challenge beneath you. Matthew Get your own web address. Where's a could place I could do this? I've been playing on the same mouthpiece for years and recently found out I was allergic to it. I could have gotten it laquered but decieded to find a new one instead. I'd really appreciate some opinions. Thanks, Allen - Ready for the edge of your seat? Check out tonight's top picks on Yahoo! Re: [Hornlist] Kyle Mills
Wow... Reading this brings silence to me really. I am a horn player in calgary and was fortunate to talk to Kyle Mills for half an hour after he had won the audition. What I drew from that conversation was how amazing of a person he truly must have been. Thoughts and prayers to his family and freinds. I consider myslef extremely fortunate for that breif interaction with him. -- Mathew James ___ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org

Re: subject: [Hornlist] Mahler 9 excerpt.
I have the complete part on hand, I am jsut not 100% certain what exceprt it acctually is/ On 12/8/06, Anna Henry <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Hi Mathew, The book I use for auditions and study is David Thompson's "Orchestral Audition Repertoire." It contains complete parts, not just excerpts. I can't remember specifically, but I think Mahler 9 is in it. It's a wonderful book, and I use it all the time. The parts come in a binder so that you can take out what you need and not carry the rest of the 1000 pages with you. The only drawback, it's about $100 - but I've gotten that much use out of it. You can find it at: http://www.thompsonedition.com/ Hope that helps, Anna Hi all. I am preparing a mock audition and one exceprt is Mahler 9, a first honr one. I couldnt find it in any excpert books I had, or my library had, so I went to the score the old fashion way...Now I have a question, what are the standard ones? As in the most likley to be asked for, and help directing me to the most important ones to learn. I cant ask my treacher as they are putting on the mock, and are not supposed to help at all. [Hornlist] Help Iding a horn
Hey list. I sat down to ID my Conn and found some peculiar things. If someone who is pretty knowledgeable about Conns could contact me off list to help me ID this it would be appreciated. [Hornlist] Valve question
Hey list. I'm looking to pick some of your brains today. I have begun to develop a interest In horn design (features more so than entire wraps and such) such as valve mechanisms, and such. Re: [Hornlist] Re: Bach cello suites
Hey, list. I have performed portions of the first suite in recital, I play from the original Cello parts as opposed to the transposed version. Aside from being true to Bach's intentions (pitch not instrument) Great on a personal level ala low register breath control and such. I enjoyed it and it worked. Re: [Hornlist] Air Support
My support to air support. My opinion on air support is as follows. You need to approach it with both sides of the tension and relaxed ideas. Think of the starting with a very firm foundation. On top of that stay relaxed. as the air dissipates from your diaphragm introduce tension from the sides (think of a Billow (sp) that you would use to start a fire at home). Then at the inhalation relax the sides and while pushing down cause the lower abdominal region to return back to the foundation of the air column and repeat.
