[Hornlist] Legendary hornist for an interview

2005-05-11 Thread Robert Douglass
If you could ask questions of any living horn legend, whom would it be?
Hermann Baumann? Barry Tuckwell? What are the burning, pressing
questions that you would just have to ask that person?

of course you're encouraged to spell the artists name correctly, unlike
the example I provided in the previous mail:

Dennis Brain

[Hornlist] What are your favorite recordings? Help requested!

2005-05-07 Thread Robert Douglass
Hi all,
I'm preparing to do an online survey and need your help. I would like to
find out what your favorite horn recordings are. When giving your
answers (feel free to include as many as you'd like), please provide a
minimum of information:

1) Artist(s)
2) Record label
3) Medium (LP, CD, etc)
4) Piece(s)
So an example would be:
Denis Brain playing Strauss II on CD from EMI.
Any other information like "I get dizzy when the tutti horns come in at
the end of the 3rd mvt." is also great.

After I've put together a nice list of everybody's favorites I plan to
do a HornRoller.com poll with them. Should be a fun exercise and perhaps
a way to get introduced to some good recordings.

cheers,
Robert Douglass

[Hornlist] French Horn Discussion Forum on HornRoller.com

2005-05-01 Thread Robert Douglass
Hi Everyone,
First of all, thanks to everyone who has submitted events, images and
stories to the HornRoller.com site! While it is great fun scouring the
internet for interesting horn-related news, the best source will always
be hornists themselves.

I'm proud to announce that HornRoller.com has another cool feature to
offer: discussion forums. The great advantage of having discussion
forums hosted by HornRoller.com is the search-engine visiblity that they
will get - in time, people searching for answers to horn playing
questions will find what they are looking for in the discussion forums.
Forums are simply a great way to have online discourse and to exchange
ideas and information.

Combined with the events calendar, image galleries and news section, the
forums on HornRoller.com will become a central place to share resources.
They support file uploads and the inclusion of images, which makes them
more flexible than the simple text-based email lists. Furthermore, the
material on the email lists doesn't get such great visibility in search
engines and thus much of the information presented here gets hidden to
seekers.

In any case, a forum like the one on HornRoller.com can only become a
vital and active meeting place if it achieves some initial momentum.
That's where I have a ***special favor*** to ask of the people here;
please visit the forums and posts new topics or add comments to the ones
that exist. A good place to start would be for anyone who is attending
the Western Illinois Horn Festival to report back on how it is going,
who's playing what, what cool gear was for sale, and best of all, if
there are any photos, to share them as well.

You can visit the forum here:
http://www.hornroller.com/french_horn_discussion_forum
You'll need a user account to post, which you can get here:
http://www.hornroller.com/user/register
As you can tell from the brisk pace of development, HornRoller.com has
some ambitions. There is a *huge* number of features on the "coming
soon" list, many of which don't exist for horn players anywhere else on
the internet. Stay tuned!

cheers,
Robert Douglass

Re: [Hornlist] Couple of technical questions

2005-04-16 Thread Robert Douglass
Bill, I may be wildly wrong, but I'm not sure that there are a lot of
technicians out there who apply methods scientific and accurate enough
to keep up with the technical questions you asked in one of your first
mails on the subject. I've seen many shops where replating the valves to
fix supposed leaks involved nothing more than a bucket with the
solution, an electric motor so that the valves could spin in the
solution under a current, and some fine-grained sandpaper. In any case,
you're not getting many technical answers to your technical questions. I
wonder what the Lawsons would have to say?

If I brought a horn in to a good technician, how would he measure it
to determine it needs a valve job.

Re: [Hornlist] Changing mpc when changing horn

2005-04-12 Thread Robert Douglass
I always stuck with the same mp when possible, but sometimes it doesn't
make sense (like when playing on a descant horn, natural horn, baroque
horn). In those cases it really pays to pick a mp that fits the horn. If
I were just switching between double horns I'd always keep the same mp.

Re: [Hornlist] HornRoller.com - News for Hornists

2005-04-11 Thread Robert Douglass
PS. I'm covering the 2005 Northeast Horn Workshop in Purchase, NY; if
you're planning on attending please take your camera and notepad so you
can send me a full report after the event. I'm especially keen to get
photos and earwitness accounts of Lowell Greer's hunting horn
presentation. I'm hoping it'll bring back memories of when he used to
play those things in the corridors of the University of Michigan School
of Music (much to the chagrin of the other teachers, I'm sure). Thanks!
