Re: [Hornlist] Horns that stand in F or Bb

I bought an alex from the factory a couple of years ago and they set
them up standing in Bb by default unless you ask them for F. Everyone I
know in Ireland uses F though.

Hi,
Just out of curiousity...how many of you play a double horn that stands
in Bb as opposed to F?

2005-03-16 Thread Robert Fagan
Hi all,
I bought this CD a few weeks ago and it's absolutely incredible.
Also interesting in that it shares a couple of tracks with the London horn
sound CD... makes for an interesting comparison. I am in awe of the
technical playing by the London players but the tone and musicality on the
Vienna CD is amazing... Enjoy it if you can get a copy.

Is there a European concert schedule? I see nothing about upcoming concerts

RE: [Hornlist] Horn Bathing/Valve Cleaning

2005-01-31 Thread Robert Fagan
Hi all,
I know this has been discussed many (many!!) times but I'd really
like to be able to remove and clean my own rotors. However, I've never met
anyone here in Ireland able or willing to show me how... It's a very small
repair market here and I can understand (but not like) their reluctance to
share their techniques. So the question is, is there any web or written
description of exactly what should or shouldn't be done when removing and
reassembling rotors? I do have an older horn that needs a valve cleaning
before I sell it so I can practice on that and if I have any problems I
won't have lost any money if I then need a repairman to fix my mistakes!

Thanks a million for any info,

Robert

RE: [Hornlist] Cold Sores

2005-01-23 Thread Robert Fagan
Hi,
I'm another cold-sore sufferer and a microbiologist too... The only
thing that will definitely work is the antiviral drug acyclovir (sold in
Ireland and probably elsewhere as "Zovirax" cream) If you catch a cold-sore
early this can prevent a blister forming and will speed up the healing
anyway. Unfortunately now that you've had one you will more than likely have
periodic reoccurrences so it'd be a good idea to buy some Zovirax anyway and
use it if you ever get any strange tingling/swelling in your lip in future.
As for playing, it's very important not to break the skin when you have a
cold-sore because it then takes MUCH longer to heal. If the blister has
already split then all you can do is try to avoid irritating it more and
wait for it to heal. But please be very conscious of the fact that the virus
which causes cold-sores is highly contagious so don't let anyone else touch
your mouthpiece/glass/cup/towel etc. and remember that the virus can
infect other parts of your own body as well so try not to touch it with your
fingers and wash your hands well if you do! Sorry if that's not particularly
cheerful advice but cold-sores do get a lot easier to deal with after a
while and it is possible that you may be one of the lucky few who never have
a reoccurrence.

[Hornlist] Teaching a beginner

2004-10-31 Thread Robert Fagan
Hi all,
I'm looking for some advice from some of the experienced teachers on
the list. Last year I started teaching horn in a local community band which
is trying to change over to a school of music type format. They had no real
teachers as such until a few years ago and I'm the first horn player they've
had on staff. Most of last year was spent working with the existing horn
students, fixing problems with their technique mainly... It was great fun
and very rewarding to see their rapid improvement. Now, however, I'll be
getting some absolute beginners to teach. My teaching experience to date has
mainly been with older students that have been passed on to me by my old
horn teacher and I have no experience at all with young beginners so if
anyone could offer any advice as to teaching beginners or point me to any
books that specifically deal with this it'd be much appreciated... any
advice at all would be welcome...

Thanks,
Robert

RE: [Hornlist] Valve Cleaning Class

2004-09-11 Thread Robert Fagan
Thanks Paul.
What I had in mind was using the alcohol after a regular detergent rinse of
the horn to remove any residual moisture (and/or grease) before re-oiling
the valves. I should probably point out that I'm a microbiologist (when I'm
not playing that is) and the alcohol I use in work is ultra-high grade
ethanol that I use routinely for sterilizing surfaces (a tragic waste in my
opinion, but the smell is gorgeous... unless you're hung-over of course) and
for DNA work. It's fantastic for removing residual water but I'd never
considered using it in my horn. I probably won't try it on my alex but I
have an old Yamaha that I'm hoping to sell in a while the valves really
aren't very good (a common problem on Yamahas I've tried) so if I can't get
them working any smoother myself I'll probably have to get them cleaned
professionally (costs over €100 here in Dublin!)... I'll try anything
provided it won't harm the valves. Anyway thanks again...

Robert,
The cleaning of the valves and slides with alcohol before storing a horn
that I mentioned was not to actually clean the horn(as in an ultrasound or

acid bath cleaning) , but basically to degrease it so the grease and oil
would
not gum or harden over time.

Hi,
Just a quick question on a point raised by Paul Navarro. Paul
suggested alcohol cleaning of valves/slides before long-term storage. I have
access to very high purity alcohol but I had never considered it for valve
cleaning before it does make sense that it might help though. So the
question is has anyone tried an alcohol rinse (in addition to general
cleaning I suppose) and would it be of any help in routine cleaning??

No, a final last coat of quality oil is not necessary or desirable.
The oil will congeal and gum up and make slides and valves hard to move or

to freeze.
It is better to clean all of the slides off with alcohol(91%), and to
wash out the valves and casings with alcohol.
I have stored horns for over 5 years using this method and when I unpack
them, all of the valves and slides work without any problems.

Hi all,

On a lighter note. with all this talk of Wagner I'd just like to
congratulate the members of the English National Opera who performed the 3rd
Act of Die Walkuere at Glastonbury on Sunday morning. They did a fantastic
job considering the very odd surroundings. It was the most surreal

people, most of whom had never seen live classical music in their lives. The
crowd was amazingly appreciative and it's safe to assume that the ENO will
be invited back next year.

RE: [Hornlist] travelling on planes with a horn

2004-02-16 Thread Robert Fagan
Hi,
I've carried my old fixed-bell horn in the cabin in a soft
gigbag. I got on the plane by carrying it across my back where the bell
size wasn't obvious. Once on board, the body of the horn will fit under
the seat in front with the bell towards you. Should be safe enough,
provided you don't kick the bell in flight. I've done this several times
without any damage, certainly a better option than checking it into the
hold if you're stuck. Thankfully I have a screw-bell horn now and don't
have to risk it.

Good luck,

Robert

[Hornlist] tarnish patch on new Alex

2003-11-02 Thread Robert Fagan
Hi all,
Just looking for a little advice. I recently bought an Alex 103 direct
from Alex. When it arrived last week there was an oval ring of discoloured
brass adjacent to the valves. It started off black and faded to pink over a
few days (isn't oxidised nickel pink??). Then I was away for a few days and
when I returned a larger blackish ring had appeared around the first. I've
sent Alex some photos but haven't heard back from them yet. So the question
is does anyone know what this is, why it's happening and is it likely to go
away?? I've got pictures if anyone in interested. Anyway, thanks for any
help.

2003-10-07 Thread Robert Fagan
Hi,
Do you normally get coldsores?? If its a coldsore (lasting 6 weeks
though?!?) then treatment with acyclovir will get rid of it in a few days
(brand name is zovirax here and probably in UK too)... That's the only thing
that will treat a coldsore, so it's useful to have anyway if you ever get
coldsores. However, it sounds more like a fungal infection you've got
often cause dry, raw patches on the skin and easily treated (and easy to get
one when you're in a dusty environment) so maybe get yourself to a doctor or
try one of the over-the-counter antifungal creams (your pharmacist should be
able to give some advice).

Hi all,

Got a bit of a problem at the moment, wondering if any of you guys can help?
I've had a patch of dry skin on my top lip a bit like a cold sore for the
last 6 weeks or so now, and it's not showing any signs of going.

It started when I was rushing about moving house in the very hot weather and
I was sweating a lot (eurgh!). Despite regular application of lipsyl and
blisteze it's not shifting at all. It varies between looking a bit red and
being very dry with flakes of dead skin. It can be very painful to play on,
and because of the dry skin I've lost some sensation in it.

Fortunately it's not in the centre of my lip, it's to one side, so I can
keep playing. It is very painful though, and affects my stamina.

Has anybody got any experience of this or offer any useful hints? Fairly
pointless going to a doctor as they'll just tell me to stop worrying!

Thanks in advance!

Martin.

RE: [Hornlist] Off-center mouthpiece placement

2003-09-17 Thread Robert Fagan
I do pretty much the same thing. In my case it's caused by the shape of my
two front teeth which aren't completely straight. It doesn't seem to cause
me any obvious problems but I'm only an enthusiastic amateur not a pro.
However, I have noticed that over a period of months I play gradually more
off-centre if I don't think about it and that has caused problems in my
playing before; primarily in tuning but also in range and control in high
registers. I know a trumpet player who had a similar but more severe
problem. It took him well over a year to straighten his embouchure and he
still isn't as confident in his playing now. So it might not be a bad idea
to fix it now while you're getting back in shape rather than later when it
may be a problem.

RE: [Hornlist] trio or quartet for horn, violin, cello or piano

2003-09-11 Thread Robert Fagan
While we're on this topic, does anyone happen to know of any trios that
could be played on horn, bass and flute (or recorder)?? Some of the horn
cello violin trios might work but the violin parts could be fairly awkward
on flute...

Thanks,
Robert

Nobody else has mentioned it yet, but there is a wonderful trio for horn,
violin and piano by Lennox Berkeley. I have an old recording of it played by
Dennis Brain, Manoung Parikian and Colin Horsley.

It is Berkeley's centenary this year.

[Hornlist] Vienna Phil.

2003-09-07 Thread Robert Fagan
Hi all,
The Vienna Phil. played in Dublin last night and would you believe they
sang (well croaked and hummed mostly) the William Tell overture as their
encore!! Top marks for laughs anyway;)

You know, I've never named any of my horns. Nor do I know many people who
do, or at least have ever refered to their horns by name in my presence.

I do name my computers however. There's Cosmo, and Budsy, and Betsy, and
God, and Kiwi, but God is usually offline.

The next question is if you don't have a name for your horn, what WOULD you
name it? For me, it would have to be 'Fred'. Chummy, dependable Fred.

RE: [Hornlist] Different bell question

2003-03-11 Thread Robert Fagan
On a slightly related note... has anyone ever tried using spray-on teflon
lubricant for bell threads or any other part of the horn?? I've used it on
very finely machined bike parts but haven't chanced it on my horn yet... any
thoughts??

We have found that the best lubrication for bell rings is graphite.
Take a soft lead pencil and scratch it across the threads on the bell flare
15 or 20 times. This should keep the noise down and will lubricate the ring
without it picking up dirt and dust which will eventuallly cause wear on the
threads.

[Hornlist] Alex/Brasil gig-bags

2003-01-23 Thread Robert Fagan
Hi all,
I'm buying an Alex 103 with a detachable bell and was looking at the
gig-bags that alex sell. They sell the brilliant "Brasil" fibreglass case
(is that a Marcus Bono bag??) and have recently started selling a very
similar case that they make themselves. I was just wondering if anyone has
bought or seen one of the Alex cases and can tell me how they compare to the
Brasil version. They look very similar in photos but the Alex one is
considerably cheaper. Thanks for any info.
