Re: [Hornlist] Pichl Fuchs
David, The Mozart/Lickl/Pichl Cassazione are all the same work. Some modern publishers list the work as being attributed to Mozart in the hopes of increasing sales. -Marc Cerri www.mjcerri.com -Original Message- From: David Goldberg [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: The Horn List horn@music.memphis.edu Sent: Fri, 6 Jun 2008 2:13 pm Subject: Re: [Hornlist] Pichl Fuchs I resolved part of the mystery of Vaclav Wenzel Wenceslas Pichl yesterday after a long search in cyberspace. I'll detail my journey, as there may be useful information here. The liner notes in my Kocian Quartet CD say that the name on the Pichl quartet manuscript is not written clearly; that it could be the work of a German-born composer named Lickl, of which there were several. Then I surfed the internet for both, and I eventually stumbled on http://www.worldcat.org/ , which allows anyone to simultaneously search many libraries around the world - amazing. While there, I found a wind quartet by Johann Georg Lickl, named Cassazione. That is the name of the 1st movement on my Kocian CD. To make sure that this is the Pichl quartet, I visited Amazon.com, searched for Lickl and came up with a CD that contains what looked like the same thing. Amazon allows you to listen to sound samples - that confirmed it. Short story, the Wenzel Pichl wind quartet was composed by Johann Georg Lickl. Back to worldcat.org - this site will list all of the libraries that have the piece in their catalog. In this case, there are many. But a possible complicating factor is that there might be further confusion - between the Lickl-Pichl Cassazione, and one by Mozart for the same 4 winds. Mozart's name appears through the worldcat.org library hits, and in one case at least, appears the word forgery. So it ain't over yet. I don't remember the Mozart Cassazione. Amazon seems to be down just now(!) so I can't get a sound sample of the Mozart to compare with Lickl-Pichl. On a side note, I stumbled on another interesting website with lots of links: http://www.music.ucsb.edu/projects/csms/ , the Czech and Slovak Music Society. RE: [Hornlist] Re: [horn] Il Trovatore: Cavatina Leonora - Ab Horn
Thank you Hans for definitively answering my question. All the best, Marc Cerri In a message dated 9/24/2006 10:36:00 AM Eastern Daylight Time, hans [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Hallo Marc, this is not a consensus nor a logical solution but a fact. I do not remember how often I played Il Trovatore, but it has been in the repertory of my first, my second now my´ third last opera house since I joined the orchestra in 1962. And our orchestras are full time we play a full season from mid September to July 31st with nearly everyday performance. So my answer was not a guess but definitely about a fact. This makes the difference with my answers. Not far from about ten thousand performances total within over 44 years. ___ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org
[Hornlist] Il Trovatore: Cavatina Leonora - Ab Horn
Hi All, I don't have quick access to the score and I was wondering if anyone knows whether the Ab horn (IV part) in the Cavatina Leonora from Il Trovatore is Ab (LA b) alto or basso. I would normally read it as an alto transposition but that puts the 4th horn up to high B-flats and never below B-flat third space. Thanks in advance for your help. [Hornlist] Quartets for 2 flutes 2 horns
Hello Fellow Hornists, For those interested, I've added two new horn works to my catalog. Both are classical period wind quartets for the rather unusual pairing of 2 flutes and 2 horns one by J.G. Abeltshauser (fl. 1810s) the other by W.A. Lütgen (fl. 1840s). The horn parts are in D but not to difficult for a good amateur player. [Hornlist] expression marking Fr ???
Dear list, I'm currently editing a set of 3 trios for clarinet, horn bassoon (Op. 1) by the French horn player Frédéric Duvernoy (1765-1838). I have come across the unusual expression marking Fr. It happens not only once but a few times throughout all the parts and is not confused with rinf (rinforzando) which also appears in the edition, published in Paris circa 1800. The notation appears to be a dynamic or accent marking and happens between sections of P (piano) and F (forte) so I'm tempted to believe it might be a marking close to mf but I would like to know exactly what it stands for. If anyone has any suggestions or ideas I would greatly welcome them. Thank you in advance for your help. [Hornlist] Fr ères Grimm / Frères Boeck
Dear list: Does anyone have any biographical information that connects these two pairs of virtuosi horn players? In program notes for a CD released in the 1980s (Crystal Records Treasures for Horn Trumpet) William Scharnberg wrote that some contemporary orchestra rosters and lists of horn music written in France indicated that they were in fact the same duo, most commonly known as the Boeck Brothers (Ignaz Anton). Unfortunately, Bill doesn't recall where he came across this information but believes that it might have been included in the published edition of the music used for the recording. Does any have access to a copy of Two Waltzes and a March (Horn Quartets) by Grimm-Frères edited by Janetzky? If so, could you possible pdf/fax me the bio page if there is one. Any information or leads would be greatly appreciated. [Hornlist] Re: Conn lead pipes - Thanks for responses
Thanks all for your informative comments. I guess the thing to do is call my local repairman (Randy Ulmer) and have him order a stock Conn pipe direct from the factory. It seems that the responses imply that the quality of the new Conn pipes should be pretty consistent so there is no need to sample a few before selecting one. Thanks again for those who offered advice (or their lead pipes). [Hornlist] Conn lead pipes
The lead pipe on my 20 year old Conn 8D recently rusted through putting a pin size hole in the pipe where the palm meets the hand grip. I've taped it up but I'm now looking to replace the pipe, preferably with a new Conn 8D lead pipe. Does anyone know were I can get a hold of a few of them to tryout before buying? I'm aware of the custom replacement pipes by Atkinson, Lawson and Patterson but their prices are a bit more then I can afford right now. I was told that a new Conn pipe would cost about $150 but I've spent several hours online searching for one and no one seems to carry them. Any suggests would be greatly appreciated.
