Re: [Hornlist] Braces for brass players

2005-07-15 Thread Catherine Eisele
I see I am too late, But I just wanted to take a moment to suggest another
alternative that I have yet to read about elsewhere. In eighth grade (when I
was 13, I am now 18), my orthodontist suggested an alternative to braces that
consists of removable wires (somewhat like a retainer but with no plastic) that
fit around the back molars as anchors and then adjust the teeth from the back.
It's very hard to explain, and although I have had much success with the
method, I do not know its name. The "braces" aren't noticeable at all to
someone looking at the mouth, and because they are removable, the "braces" do
not interfere with any of the finer points of horn playing (ie. articulation).

If you, or anyone in a similar predicament, can find an orthodontist who is
familiar with this method, I recommend it highly. There were no detriments to
my playing and as a bonus, it's especially easy to clean.

The orthodontist tells me that many kids have problems with their tongues
getting cut with behind-the-teeth braces. We just saw the orthodontist
today and agreed to have the "normal" kind installed. A couple of "spacers"
were inserted today after molds were made of my son's teeth, and he'll begin
getting the braces themselves a week from now. Thanks to everyone for their

There are a number of orthodontic devices that go
behind the teeth, like retainers and bite-plates.
These, too, "interfere" with normal speech for a time,
and I would imagine that braces behind the teeth would
have the same effect. After a few days, one should
adapt to the feeling and speech should largely return
to normal.

Besides, having something behind your teeth like that
should really only affect dental and probably alveolar
consonants. Someone could just do what I did when I
had my retainer (which I never wore often enough to
properly adjust to) and avoid all words with 's's and
'd's. Heh.

[Hornlist] Braces for brass players

2005-07-13 Thread Bob Williams
Braces which are attached behind the teeth, rather than in front, may be
ideal for brass musicians who wish to continue playing while the braces are
on. You can do a Google search for "lingual orthodontics" (which is what
this is called). There was a presentation at the International Horn Society
in June on this (by a dentist and hornplayer), and it sounded quite
interesting.

2005-07-12 Thread Stacy Devino

I would go with the standard issue braces, they are the better decision with
time whether or not music becomes a career. There are a ton of great brass
players who have braces ( look at the State level Music Ensembles) and it is
just about gettng used to them. I knew a bunch of monster brass players in high
school - even college with braces ( my brother who plays tuba had them for a
long time). If you would like some immediate assistance with those nasty things
then buy these for $10, many people I know said that it made the first 2 months
a breeze (they didn't need them later because their mouth adjusted)
http://www.music123.com/Jet-Tone-Lip-Protector-i83249.music

The strongest recomendation is preventative Orthdontics when a child is growing
up. My teath are so very straight that everyone thinks that I had braces when I
was younger, but never did. My brother only had to get braces because he had an
overbite that was slight. I hope this helps.

2005-07-12 Thread Nicholas Hartman Hartman
I went through the same mess a few years ago. My parents said that they would
pay for invisalign, should the orthodontist recomend them. The dentist said
that they were years ahead of their time, a neat but impractical idea, and that
we should not bother with them. We then sought another opinion, this time, an
orthodontist who was also an active trombone player. He also said that
invisalign was not what we wanted. In the end, my parents left the decision to
get braces up to me, and I decided to not get them. I've never had a cavity or
any other dental problem except the fact that I have too many teeth in a
relatively small mouth. My teeth have never interfered with my playing. I'm
happy with my choice, though my smile will never make it on any magazine
covers.

Thank you. This is the product I was thinking of.

I know most children who wear braces adapt, more or less, after a while. It
is really true that these will make playing easier, I wonder? I imagine
it's nearly impossible to find people who've worn conventional braces, tried
playing with them for a period of weeks, then switch to Invisalign and can
compare the two.

While I am not a dentist, nor do I claim to be one on the Internet, I am
aware of a product that may be what you are looking for.

There are braces that are molded plastic. The process involves making a
whole series of such braces. They are not unlike mouth guards used in some
contact sports. Each set of braces realigns the teeth a small amount with
gradual changes over a year I believe.

You may find this website of use.

There is also a product advertised as "Invisiline". I'm not sure of the
difference. Talk to your orthodontist.
