Re: [Hornlist] 42nd Street
Thanks Walter Lewis. I still play the Paxman GT. It is a great machine and easy blowing which makes it good for pit work. I have played "Fiddler" many times including with the original old hand written copied part, and with the newer printed part. But even the new part needed lots of editing, especially voice cues. I have also played "Joseph - Technicolor" and agree that it is tough, especially all those high "C's" with no help from anyone else. Would love to play "Cats". If I get stuck in a one horn situation perhaps I could contact you and get tips on consolidating the parts. Re: [Hornlist] 42nd Street
I also enjoy doing pit work. Mr. Dalley, I remember doing a gig a long time ago with the Lake St. Clair Symphony when you were living in Michigan...That was a very interesting horn you were playing. In the past couple of years, I've done Oliver, Sweeney Todd, (a lot of different meters to work with) Jekyll and Hyde, Peter Pan, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat (not my favorite by any means) and also did Cats last spring. Cats is a challenging blow, scored for 3 horns, company did it with just one, so I sat down at the computer and scanned a lot of parts to fill in where the second horn gives the first a break. If you ever get the opportunity to do it, you'll have some fun...I recently found out that I'm going to do Fiddler this spring... Happy Thanksgiving to all of the US members of the list! Now if only a miracle can occur and the Loins can beat the Packers on Thursday... Walt Lewis [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I have found playing in the pit is fun and builds endurance. The part is challanging because only a small ensemble is playing and I have to play the horn 1 or 2 part and also play parts of Trombone 1, Bassoon, Cello, and Trumpet 2. My part has a lot of paste up inserts in it. So it ends up with two hours of pretty steady playing iusing three mutes and stopped horn. And the range is from G, bottom line of bass clef staff to high C (fortunately only one note). Love it. every instrument has these problems, piccolo in tchaik 4, triangle in Wagner Tanhouser overture, Contrabassoon in Beethoven 9, and just think per note how much you are being payed, more than your three buddies. It's the composer's option. S(he) wanted it to sound that way. Paul Mansur On Nov 18, 2007, at 12:53 PM, <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: My part was 4th. You are so right. If the third horn pokes you in time for you to come in, you don't really have to count the rests and can simply enjoy the opera! ___ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org

These many rests give you the opportunity to listen to the other voices in the orchestra & the singers on stage. But very simple text to read. Next time: just read in the other tonalities. Studying scales & chords helps a lot. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, November 18, 2007 3:07 PM To: The Horn List Subject: Re: [Hornlist] 42nd Street Just finished playing "Rigoletto." [Hornlist] 42nd Street
Hi, Just finished a six-show run of "42nd Street" with the River City Theatre Company. Great fun. For those of you that haven't played the show, the next to last number goes up to a high Db, and the last note of the show is a F to high C, with a fermata just for kicks. Went 12-0 on both, so I'm undefeated ;p I absolutely love pit work. Where else can you play in 6 sharps? Would have been easier with a transposed part; could have avoided a few double-sharps. One continuity error...the set for "We're In The Money" had a half dozen or so circular platforms for dancing on, painted to look like dimes. Eisenhower dimes.
