[Hornlist] Beethoven 9th

2007-04-09 Thread wab4cor
Greetings from Wildomar
Last weeks dialogue about the Eb solo in the above was interesting and
disturbing. Certain discrepancies between the article in the 1999 Horn Call
and what was said on the list were unchallenged by our astute listers. (See
the IHS web site)
Whether tradition, sea story, oral history or fairy tale, an accurate telling
of the first perfomance is available. Any speculation as to who when where etc
is detailed and why is in the footnotes.

Happy reading.

PS My citrus and Paulonia tomentosa are in bloom and the aroma is wonderful

Re: [Hornlist] Beethoven 9th the 4th horn solo

2005-07-18 Thread Nielsen Dalley
Steve is right about the trend for the principal horn to play the 4th horn
solo. Actually in many orchestras the 4th horn players are very good players
and should be allowed to play the solo. However, alas, there are conductors and
sometines principal horn players who want the principal to play the part. I
have had the honor and distinct pleasure to play the part many times, in one
case I was hired into the orchestra specifically to play the part. Sitting in
the back row and just in front of the first line of the chorus, and next to the
tympani, I got some impressive comments when the third movement came around.
They hadn't anticipated that the last chair in the horn section had so much to
play. Regards

Re: [Hornlist] Beethoven 9th fourth horn solo

2005-07-09 Thread Hans
What kind of orchestras & how often ?

If Berlin Phil & Vienna Phil get the solo played by the
soloist of the horn section, the principal, what might be
wrong with it. Risking a high class concert ??? And these
are the top pro orchestras.

Sorry !

Whenever I've played Beethoven's 9th in a professional
orchestra, the solo has been played by the very competent
fourth horn players.

Solo more often than not is performed by the Principal Horn
rather than the 4th Horn.

How long has this been the practice? Why did Beethoven
score it for 4th Horn if the Principal would end up playing
it? Was there that much difference between expectations of
4th Horns players when he completed the work and today?
Just curious.
