I've actually heard of horn players literally removing their hand from the
 bell
to play it, but how do you keep the pitch down?! The horns are built to have
 hands in the bell.

Try and not point it at your section mate's ear drum:)

RE: [Hornlist] Bells Up Definition

2004-11-30 Thread hans
Jim, do you think that effect (bells up) be so much important ??? There
are extremely few spots where it is asked for.

But holding the horn bell up a bit more side wards opening the bell
hand a bit more than usual would do the required effect. Anything else
would not be musical but visual only.

The sound must be very wide somewhat hollow, like using one of these
antic megaphones.

Subject: [Hornlist] Bells Up Definition

Is it possible to get a definitive answer as to how to hold the horn
when
the music calls for bells up? I ashamed to say that in all of high
school
and college and even my daughter's horn performance degree, no one has
given
us the proper way to play bells up. Do you keep your hand in the horn
and
raise the bell horizontally or do you hold the bottom of the bel amd
lift it
above horizontal?

I always thought that Schalltricher auf or similar phrases meant bells
up, and that schmetternd (brassy or blaring) was a stylistic indication.
In other words, a horn can be played in a loud and blaring fashion (that is,
on purpose) without resorting to bells up. Have I been playing Mahler wrong
all these years?

You beat me to the email machine! You are quite right. Professor Pizka
while a busy man has addressed this on his website.
http://www.pizka.de/GMahler2.htm. Schmetternd is stylistic in origin and
does not refer to bell position. I would side more with the brassy than the
blaring if at all possible and within good taste (?!?!?).
