Personally, I have never broken a string. (knock on wood) I replace my
strings annually. My son had a Reynolds that broke lots of string until I
smoothed the edges of the holes.

If it is used for fishing, a serious tackle shop with sell it by the yard.

I've always preferred Dacron to nylon. Recently, the last year or so, I've been using
spectrum, 65# test, available at serious tackle shops. The size of 65# spectrum is
about that of 15# Dacron or nylon. I found when I knotted it, the knot would easily
pull through the hole. I now tie the knot in a double strand, and it stays put. I
string the valve with the double strand. The two strands don't wear evenly, so if one
strand breaks, the other operates just fine. Because the strand to break first is a
little tighter, it's easy to feel the failure and replace the string when you next get
a chance.

Hey,

How long does that "Braided Dacron with Teflon" last before needing to be restrung?
It sounds intriguing, and I need to buy some valve string as well!

[Hornlist] Braided Polypropylene valve string?

2004-01-27 Thread Valkhorn
I'm looking around for a replacement spool and instead of getting nylon I
would like to upgrade to braided polypropylene. However I cannot find any of this
by the spool. Does anyone know where I could find a whole spool (preferably
100+ yards) of this stuff?

I know the nylon is easy to find, and comes in around a dollar to five
dollars per spool. I've heard good things about switching to polypropylene so I'd
like to try that out.

I know plenty of places that sell this by the meter, but I'd rather buy an
entire spool of the stuff. Buying it by the meter (some places charge 1+ dollars
PER METER) in the quantity I need would be way too expensive, so that's why
I'm looking for the spool.
