And the "Duo Kontarsky (the two brothers pianists) booked a flight
somewhere in Brazil and got just one seat reserved upon the name "Duo
Kontarsky".

Or the famous poster in Vienna, announcing the premiere of the new
production of Trobadour in the State Opera:

Il Trovatore
Director: Herbert von Karajan
Conductor: Herbert von Karajan
Music: Herbert von Karajan

I got this rare poster

Dear All

Or - "that was the Hebrides Overture by Mendelssohn, arranged by
Bartholdy"
or - "The Sinfonietta by Jan - a Czech".

The flautist in one of my groups (I will change all surnames to Smith to
protect those for whom protection is an act of kindness) is called Alastair
Smith. For a concert at a local Music Club he was indisposed and Catherine Smith
took his place.

When we arrived at the venue we told the organiser of the change. His head
could not take it in.

Now, for more than one reason, not by any stretch of the imagination could
Catherine Smith be mistaken for a gentleman especially when she is wearing her
concert frock, yet this buffoon managed it.

"Right" he said, looking straight at Catherine who was holding her flute,
"the flautist is Alastair Smith." No, we said, that's Catherine, "Ah, right,"
he said, "So Catherine is away and it's Alastair instead" This went on for
several minutes.

When we went on stage our hero introduced us all and, asking her to stand
up, introduced her as Alastair.

This same genius also managed to mis-read both the order of programme (to
which we had added numbers becausehe didn't manage to read them in the right
order before we went on) and all of the composers' names except Mozart.

He introduced the Hindemith Kleine Kammermusik as being written by
Hind-Smith.

All the best,

Lawrence

HAPPY APRIL FOOL'S DAY TO ALL.

Hey, did anyone here the narrative about cloning Beethoven on
"Performance Today"? (Today, of course.) The gist of the conclusion
was that it would be very, very expensive, and even then there would be
enough cell mutation that we would get a highly modified Beethoven. In
other words, we would not get a Ludwig v. B. Maybe a George Beethoven
that would be a rapper. Maybe even a saxophonist!

On Friday I will be playing the Mozart Wind Serenades in Preston.

The programme has been printed by someone from the venue and lists the
instruments:

2 oboes; 2 clarinets; 2 bassoons and 2 hors.

Should be an interesting gig!

Reminds me of the BBC announcement: .Adagio & Allegro op.70 for
value horn & piano by Robert Schumann ... Off course, if you don’t use
a valve horn for this piece, you should have a value horn at least, but
it would not help much.
