Why not save the cost of the mute and just practice stopped? You'll kill
about five birds with one stone that way. It's highly annoying at first, but
after awhile you might actually find you can play stopped without a stopping
mute. What a concept! You'll find it will very much help your "open" playing
as well.

I have found that an empty 1/2 liter or 1 pint water bottle to be as effective
and somewhat more in tune. Less expensive, too.

On the same note, what's the opinion of practice mutes? Are they worth it or
should one just resolve to disturb the neigbours?

Thanks,

Thank you, Cabbage. I was wondering if they should be removed first;)

I think mutes can be very useful for practice. I think the verdict
is still out on practice mutes. I personally don't like them, but a
lot of folk use them to advantage. I am reminded that Barry Tuckwell
related several times that because he traveled a great deal on his
concert tours, he had to practice in hotel rooms. When he needed to
do this he did not want to annoy the neighboring guests. His
solution was to turn on the television, preferably to find Bonanza or
other Western movie with a pretty loud sound track. Then he would
practice with a mute. He said that in all his years of concertizing
on the road he never had a complaint registered from a guest to the
hotel management about the sound from his room.
I find that mutes increase the resistance of whatever you are playing
and you can simulate a pretty rigorous playing session in a short
time. It then becomes a great relief to get the mute out and find
that playing has become much easier, physically.

I hate my practice mute! It's terrible to blow through. I can't imagine
what good that would for your sound. I have mine for last resort, like when
I have to practice in a hotel room.

2008-06-23 Thread Steven Mumford

I was living too far away for my mom to yell at me about it, but I did
manage to get evicted from three apartments in a row. Would that be loud
enough? Then we moved into a duplex and the neighbors said "oh yeah, we used
to walk by those apartments all the time on the way to the grocery store and
we'd look at each other and say, man I'm glad we don't live next door to THAT!"
We got along great though and they promised they'd bang on the ceiling if it
was really bothering them. They said "well, we like everything you play except
Till Eulenspiegel, we hate that one!".

"Shut UP!" When that happens, then you are practicing loudly
enough.
