Re: [Hornlist] Rotor Valves

2008-12-13 Thread lewhorn9
From reading your post, you might need a valve job. Try wiggling the stop arms
on each valve back and forth, if there is movement in the valve, and if you
push your valve slide in and there is no popping sound, the compression in the
valve is weak. I know that Ken Pope and others on this list can better address
your situation.

Good luck.

I have a slight problem with my rotor valves...My second valve has a clicking
noise and has had it for a while. I am not too concerned about it so I have
just left it alone. However, as of late my first, third, and trigger have been
slow and sticky. My third valve makes like a grinding noise when it is
pressed.Like I said, I am not really concerned about the second valve, but if
anyone has encountered this problem and knows how to fix it that would be
great. I do want to fix my other three since it is actually hindering the
playing. I know I will probably have to take it into a shop, but I am hesitant
because I've had bad luck with them (Yeah, they get the job done but they also
add some dents and/or scratches to it!) I was just wondering if anyone knew
what might be wrong and/or how to fix it...(and yes, I do oil it
regularly...)Thanks in advanceAshleyPSIf it matters I have a Holton Farkas

[Hornlist] Rotor Valves

2008-12-13 Thread Jay Kosta
1) Verify that the valve bearing 'plates' have not become loose. The
plates are the round disks under the valve caps, and also the plates on
the other side of the valve casings that hold the bumpers for the linkage.
These plates contain the bears that align the rotors in the valve casing.
The plates should not move (or 'click') when gentle finger pressure is put
on them. If the plates are loose it is probably best to take it to a
repair shop to have the valves adjusted.
The grinding noise could be caused by the rotor being out of alignment and
rubbing on the valve casing.

2) If you have not been doing so... besides oiling under the valve caps,
put several drops of light oil on other side of the rotor. Just drop the
oil on the gap between the moving rotor arm and the fixed valve plate,
work the valves and the oil will flow into the bearing.

'Grinding noise', huh? I'd stop right there and not play it anymore until
fixed - I would be afraid of some real damage if there is a grinding noise
going on. Perhaps you are in a small town, or rural, so do not have many
repair options. But if I were you, I would start planning a trip to a good
shop with a good rep. If you tell us where you live, you will probably get
some references to a good shop within a couple hours drive.
