[Hornlist] Seiber Notturno and Searle Aubade
I have not jumped in on this thread due to the fact that I have dozens of out of the mainstream pieces that I wish were better known that I either own and/or have reocrdings of, but do not have time to pore over them to make a recommended list. I do think that the Seiber is exceptional and wish it were more represented on programs and recordings and treasure a tape made from a Baltimore SO broadcast of Bob Pierce doing an exceptional job of getting this piece across (live). Years ago (mid 1970's), I was playing an ill-fated tour of Fiddler on the Roof in Germany and Austria, which I used as an excuse to buy up as much sheet music as my wages would allow (and then some). The 50 DM that I was making per performance allowed me to visit with Schott in Frankfurt-am-Main and numerous other vendors as I traveled. Later, when the tour more or less self-destructed (funny story, best told over a few weiss-biers), I passed through Amsterdam and bought more or less everything that Klaas Weelinck had in his horn music catalog and later hit London and raided Paxman's browser bins of music and LPs (remember them?). Somewhere along the line, I bought a copy of the Seiber (with piano reduction) and, oddly enough, the solo horn part to the Humphrey Searle Aubade was tucked into the music. I don't know if this was meant to be or accidental. Certainly, they would have been filed near each other in the drawer or on the shelf, but I notice that they have a publisher in common, so it may be a form of advertising. Anyhow, I just wanted to alert anyone that is of the opinion that the Seiber warrants looking into, the Searle is also of a similar pedigree and simply a fine piece of music. I don not know of any recordings, live or otherwise, but assume that Brain must have played it, since it is dedicated "for Dennis Brain and the Aldeburgh Festival 1955". Robert Marshall does not include this work in "Dennis Brain on Record" at all (though the Seiber AS Disc recording is in there), so I wonder if there was ever any sort of broadcast performance. The odds seem in favor of it, but maybe Paul Kampen or other list members have some insight into this that they would be willing to share. More than my 2 cent's worth, but who's counting? [Hornlist] Seiber Notturno
There is a CD of the Seiber Notturno currently available (but not Brain's recording). It is on Soren Hermansson's CD Horn Concertos (BIS-CD-376). The BBC recorded Brain playing the Notturno (on July 29, 1955, with Basil Cameron and the LSO strings), and judging by a tape that I was given years ago, both performance and sonics justify a CD issue. Re: [Hornlist] Seiber Notturno
That particular recording of Dennis Brain performing Seiber's Notturno was released on CD in 1991 by ASdisc (AS356), an Italian company. So, I don't know if this qualifies an "official" CD release. The disc, though, does contain some other interesting items including Hindemith's Sonata for Four Horns, and a recording Strauss's 2nd Horn Concerto from 1951 with the BBC Welsh Orchestra. [Hornlist] Seiber Notturno
I once heard Barry Tuckwell perform Matyas Seiber's Notturno for horn and strings. This is a gorgeous, brooding work that I believe was written for Dennis Brain. I know of no recordings of it. I second Eric's recommendation of the Seiber. The BBC recorded Brain playing the Notturno (on July 29, 1955, with Basil Cameron and the LSO strings), and judging by a tape that I was given years ago, both performance and sonics justify a CD issue.
