Re: [Hornlist] Villanelle clarification

2005-04-10 Thread Anna Henry
I think that people should take into consideration several things: often times,
students are given pieces beyond their ability levels. As strange as it may
seem, I was given a Mozart concerto before I had the range or techical ability
to make it resemble Mozart. I played it, because that's what my dad and
teacher wanted me to do. High school students do not always have ample time to
practice. They get to school at 7 in the morning, and if they're in any
extra-curriculars, don't get home until dinner. Then add to that a part-time
job, and hours of homework so that the school can get good scores on
standardized tests, high school students have every waking hour of the day
filled. No wonder it took a year to work up a challenging solo like
Villanelle. Maybe William is a perfectionist - obviously he played it well,
and wants some pointers because he knows he can do better. You should all be
more supportive of a future musician. If I had gotten comments like these when
I
 was
starting out, I probably would have changed my mind.

Hang in there, William. We aren't all so nasty.

Anna

There was no pun intended in my e-mail, was just letting you know that
humbleness is something that is a good thing. It's fine to let people know you
received a scholarship and all that other stuff, but the way you phrased it
gave
it it's cockiness. When people have to talk about how good they are, their
usually not as great as they make themselves out to be. There's nothing cooler
than talking with someone who plays horn that comes off as very humble and
who can just play their horn like no one else. It sounds as if you're a good
person with that last e-mail. Well good luck at state!

Don't worry about it -- anybody posting on this list faces a major serious
"gotcha" risk from any number of others on the list. (Not that there's
anything wrong with that -- it helps us learn humility.)

Besides, tone is a tricky thing -- even more difficult in writing prose
than in playing horn.

[Hornlist] Villanelle and William!!!

2005-04-10 Thread Hunt,Thomas
I am with you William! Your post was perfectly cool. Absolutely typical
for a budding 18 year old talent! Be a swashbuckler who owns the whole
world, but doesn't mind if everyone else owns it with him.

As you see, the horn world is full of people who want to tell you what
to do. Listen to them. . . . But don't be afraid to have some ATTITUDE!

I read your post exactly as you intended it. You wanted us to know you
are are a serious player and provided some anecdotes. You HAVE to blow
you own horn sometimes. And always LAUGH when you do it! Your gonna be
just fine in the horn world.

With gusto!

I would like to apologize for the way that my message sounded. I am not
very
good at writing, and I did not realize the amount of unnecessary or
out-of-context information that I included in my previous post.

As a high school student, I am not able to work up a piece like the
Villanelle very quickly, and in saying a year, I did not mean that this
has
been the only thing that I have worked on, instead, I have taken it
piece by
piece, as instructed by my teacher, and worked it out.
I did not mean to sound cocky, but when I have asked questions about the

piece before, everyone is surprised that a high school student would
take on
such a piece.
In regard to the scholarship, now that I reread what I wrote, it does
sound
cocky, and I apologize. It was unnecessary information and I should not
have
included it.
I posted because I felt that maybe I was missing some insight into the
piece, and that was not in black and white should be taken into
consideration, however, I have not progressed far enough to know on my
own
what I should do. I realize that I should have read what I wrote more
carefully, and I apologize for the tone of my message.

RE: [Hornlist] Villanelle - best advice

2005-04-09 Thread hans
The best advice for you, as you worked up to a year on that
piece:

Learn to study & polish a piece such as Villanelle within a
short time, say one week. Learn to study a lot of pieces,
every week another five to 8 minutes solo or every two weeks
a new concerto.

How woill you survive in the orchestra later, if you need
that long to study a standard piece ?

Revise your basic knowledge about harmonies, about the mini
forms & groups in classic music, to enable you to anticipate
things. Only by this, you might become able to sight-reed &
to learn quickly.

As strange as this might sound, I am a High school senior
who played "Villanelle" by Paul Dukas for the solo &
ensemble contest.
I got a "One" rating and will advance to the state level. I
have been working on this piece for about a year, to get it
to this point (which earned me a scholarship at Central
Missouri State University, where I am going to study Horn in
the fall) and I am wondering what kinds of advice everyone
can offer on this piece.
Also, if anyone can tell me about any good recordings of
"Villanelle," I have the Brain recording, have heard the
Baumann recording a few times, and am having trouble finding
the Arthur Berv recording.

Thanks,
William Foss

Try to be a little less cockyworks wonders.

As strange as it may sound. Are you implying that you're "special"
because you played it? Well that was the first hint of a cocky comment and
then you
went on to talk about how you're going to get a scholarship at Central
Missouri State University because you played this solo. Now was all this
necessary
just to ask for advice? If it was good enough for the scholarship, which you
made it sound like, then you should be fine. Cocky horn players usually
aren't too successful in getting along well with a section. Keep the cockiness
to
a low if you want to get along with others, especially when you go off to
college.
