Re: [Hornlist] Work(s) in progress
Hi Everyone, So far, this has been a very good year for me as a free lancerI am working three (one of them having an subsidiary orchestra in the next city) orchestras, a band and a Brass Quintet. Here's what I've played since January and what is coming up on my schedule. Orchestra Canton: Mozart Symphony #40, many excerpts from Magic Flute including Queen of the Night Aria. Plymouth Symphony: A concert entitled Pacific Overtures that featured contemporary Asian music. Dance of the Yao People by Mao Yuan, Four Ancient Scores from Dunhuang by Aniun Huang for Erhu and Orchestra, Capriccio for Erhu by George Gao (a fabulous musician, Mr. Gao was Erhu soloist) Ge Xu (Antiphony) by Chen Yi, Dr. Chen's music is VERY Challenging for horns, I was playing fourth and it has extremely high parts for fourth. I had the privilege of speaking with her following the dress rehearsal, I read in the program notes where she is currently working on a piece for Yo-Yo Ma, and Folkloric Dance Suite by Kaoru Wada. At Plymouth, we will be doing Rimsky Korsakov's Russian Easter Overture and "And God Created Great Whales" by Alan Hovhaness the second week of March (those are the only pieces I on which I play). The Hovhaness looks interesting, anyone on the list play it? Lake St. Clair Symphony: A concert entitled "Young Geniuses". Hebrides Overture by Mendelssohn, Mozart Symphony #11, Three German Dances, and Bizet Symphony #1 I will be doing a Chamber concert with Lake St. Clair on March 6th and will be doing three movements from the Schubert Octet. Next month we will be doing most of Coppelia and Peter and the Wolf, (with some dancers, oh joy! he says from a crowed pit) Grosse Pointe Symphony: Berlioz: Roman Carnival Overture, Faure, Pavanne Op.50, Schubert: Symphony #8 first Movement (why only the first movement is beyond me???) Debussy: Rhapsody #1 for Clarinet and Orchestra and Tchaikovsky: Piano Concerto #1 the soloist was an incredible pianist, Dr.Julia I, who is originally from Taiwan and is now a member of the faculty at Wayne State University, in Detroit, Michigan. I also have Copland's Lincoln Portrait with the Warren Band...along with a bunch of "American Civil War" pieces including Bilik's Civil War Fantasy. This week due to my schedule, I have no rehearsals but one...lucky me, a break! Happy Gigging everyone! Walt Lewis -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. "Sorry, if you were writing as much as I do every day, you would not wonder about few typos or letters they keyboard did not transmit to the text when my fingers rushed over the keyboard." H.P. You studied logic either at secondary school or at the university. Since you do not know how much I type everyday, you cannot possibly know if I write more or less than you, therefore your statement is illogical, because you simply do not have the empirical data to make such a statement. It is quaint that you demand perfection from others but not from yourself. I find it interesting, and again you know from your own study of history (which is extensive) that this is a character flaw that is frequently found in those who are delusional and believe themselves to "great men" and above others or as we say colloquially in the United States: "legends in their own minds." Now I am not in anyway suggesting that you fall into that category, but I would respectfully suggest that those who do not know you could erroneously, I am certain, put you in that category based only on superficial knowledge of your writing. As for not "getting" your Hundenleben reference, an inside joke to be sure to be enjoyed by your colleagues. What luck, my wife purchased some apples which I just found and I am having one for breakfast. I wish you could join me this morning. Sorry, if you were writing as much as I do every day, you would not wonder about few typos or letters they keyboard did not transmit to the text when my fingers rushed over the keyboard. You also did not get the point, why just professionals should get the meaning behind "Hundeleben", and you will not get it unless you are in the same profession as Jamie Sommerville or Robert Ward or Phil Myers or myself. You also would not understand what "Hundenummer" means for us professional musicians. We are on too different boats. And again, tutti & solo are different boats again, and solo in the orchestra & concert soloist are different boats if not different professions again. Nevertheless, thank you for the frequent updating of the horn section lists. PS: To give you a hint I will mention the famous Oberon story by Emil Wipperich but also attributed to Bruno Jaenicke (see one of the earliest Horn Calls) -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Mark Louttit Sent: Thursday, February 17, 2005 2:13 PM To: The Horn List Subject: Re: [Hornlist] Work(s) in progress "Real professional (sic) got the meaning, but many amateurs & students are used to read so fast & sloppy, that the (sic) dont (sp) realize it. An interesting observation since you obviously don't care about grammar or syntax, please see your proofread quote above. One, I suppose, should be forgiving because you are very fluent in your second language which is commendable, but you should not start throwing brickbats about when you are not perfect yourself. Perhaps the next time I must write an official report I should take it to Jamie Sommerville and have him proofread it for me. Wouldn't it be interesting to know what music we're working on just now - a sort of snapshot of repertoire covered by hornlisters at one moment of time. (It could be for a solo recital, a community band concert, a church service, a freelance gig, a pro orchestra concert, or whatever). Maybe we shouldn't count studies - we can take all that Kopprasch for granted. ...and not works that we're looking at just for interest (I'm getting to know the Gliére concerto at the moment - but I'll never play it in public!!). I can kick of with our community/amateur orchestra working on Beethoven's First Symphony and a selection of songs by Carl Michael Bellman. (In the wind section we're going to be working up Mozart's Serenade No. 11 in Eb.) Semi-staged highlights from Barber of Seville, Don Carlos and Die Fledermaus this week. Saint-Saens 3rd symph, Bolero, Faure Pavane and Rhapsody in Blue next week. Mozart serenade for 13 (12 wind and bass;) ) and probably the Gounod petit symphony with a young chamber group that I help tutor and a new set with FuzzyLogic, a jazz 10-piece I play with (flogic.org). That's about it for the next couple of weeks. Doing some work on the Wendel Hoss arrangement of Bach Cello works for horn. More importantly trying to help the Dallas-Fort Worth Horn Club get itself established.
