[Hornlist] Cases
I have an Osmun MB5-style case that was two fifty or so, and is just as good as the MB cases. I also had the same problem with it on Delta connection flight- the overhead bins are too small and the under-the-seat areas allow for little legroom with the case stowed. But for 'normal' flights the case works fine. -Reese Farnell ___ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org

Thompson Edition cases are well made, provide good protection, and are priced fairly. I just recently purchased a firm sided fixed bell case from Thompson Edition, and it has been wonderful. Granted, I've only had it for a few months. I think that people just call them gig bags out of habit. A real gig bag doesn't have a hard case. Re: [Hornlist] Cases for two horns.
I found out one interesting useful trick with my standard MB case (I bought it used a while ago, I couldn't afford it new). Two of my bells are different sizes, so one can nest right inside of the other. All I do is just take out the pads for the bell (I actually never needed them, the bell seems fine without it so far) and I strap the larger bell in, put in a piece of cloth and nest the second bell inside of it. It gets the job done. In fact I'm pleased with how strong the cases are considering they technically are gig bags. I had a terrible shock when my horn in its case fell once about three feet and I half expected to open up the case and find loose braces or horrible dents. It went through it unscratched. RE: [Hornlist] Cases for two horns.
Look at a luggage shop (travel utensils), look for an expandable board case, where you can put both horn bodies in the lower compartment, divided by a sheet of moss rubber or similar, while packing the two bells into the upper compartment or on top of the upper horn, again divided by a sheet of moss rubber. Do not forget to cut an appropriate sheet of white flexible styroform (packing material for computers), fold it twice & cut the middle corner out round in a way, that if you fold it out, you will get a fitting hole in the middle. Place this over the bell which get stuck into the other bell. If you are a careful person, this should work. Condition, the bells are cut quite low down. There is one word: IMAGINATION. If you like to get everything ready made, you have to be a millionaire or billionaire. Re: [Hornlist] cases and mouthpieces
Can't recommend these, since I haven't tried them, but Jim Patterson's HornWorks is in L.A., and he offers several custom mouthpieces that it might be worth the trip to try. Though I can't recommend his mouthpieces, I can recommend Jim as an intelligent craftsman interested in his customer's satisfaction. http://www.hornworks.com/mouthpiece.htm Fred Sacramento, CA - Original Message Follows - > Hi listers, > Question 1: The university I attend here in Orange > County, CA just purchased two ProTec hard cases (not gig > bags) for two of their horns (a holton 179 and an old 1924 > Conn Schmidt copy). Re: [Hornlist] cases and mouthpieces
I highly recommend Dennis Wick horn mouthpieces. I use them myself (a standard 5N) and use them with all of my students (typically 5N,or 7N). Since I'm on the east coast I order them via the web from Dillon Music who is also here in New Jersey. For you west coasters, I would simply search the web for a large brass instrument retailer and ask them if they currently stock Dennis Wick equipment or can they order them for you from England. Hope this helps. ___ post: [EMAIL PROTECTED] set your options at http://music.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org
[Hornlist] cases and mouthpieces
Hi listers, Question 1: The university I attend here in Orange County, CA just purchased two ProTec hard cases (not gig bags) for two of their horns (a holton 179 and an old 1924 Conn Schmidt copy). Has anybody had any experience with these cases or with modifying new cases to 'custom fit' them to the horn? Question 2: I've been considering trying a mouthpiece switch. I'm considering Moosewood(again), but they aren't local, and I don't want to spend a lot on shipping back and forth if there are other options local to Orange County and Los Angeles, CA. I've heard good things about Mark Atkinson and Chuck Mason (I think that's the name). Does anybody have any other recommendations?
