[Hornlist] Cases

2008-07-01 Thread Reese Farnell
I have an Osmun MB5-style case that was two fifty or so, and is just as good
as the MB cases. I also had the same problem with it on Delta connection
flight- the overhead bins are too small and the under-the-seat areas allow
for little legroom with the case stowed. But for 'normal' flights the case
works fine.

Thompson Edition cases are well made, provide good protection, and are priced
fairly. Mine is holding up well.

Hey everyone,

I am looking for a new screw-bell case, and would like some input on different
brands. I've heard a lot about Marcus Bonna cases, but they are a little out of
my price range. Any suggestions for good quality cases? I want one that will
easily fit into an airplane overhead compartment (along the lines of the MB5).
Thanks!

Hello, It really is not necessary to buy a case for your new Berp.
You can keep it in your horn case :)

I recently got a Berp, and went to the website to check it out. I didn't
know Berp also sells cases. Anyone familiar with the quality of these
cases? Looks a lot like another very popular well made case...

I just recently purchased a firm sided fixed bell case from Thompson Edition,
and it has been wonderful. Granted, I've only had it for a few months. It
seems to give great protection to the horn, and is very light.

Marcus Bonna still makes a two horn case, I believe. We don't stock them,
but could definitely order them, as could any other dealer selling MB cases.

I think that people just call them gig bags out of habit.

A real gig bag doesn't have a hard case.

2004-02-12 Thread Valkhorn
I found out one interesting useful trick with my standard MB case (I bought
it used a while ago, I couldn't afford it new). Two of my bells are different
sizes, so one can nest right inside of the other. All I do is just take out the
pads for the bell (I actually never needed them, the bell seems fine without
it so far) and I strap the larger bell in, put in a piece of cloth and nest
the second bell inside of it. It gets the job done.

In fact I'm pleased with how strong the cases are considering they
technically are gig bags. I had a terrible shock when my horn in its case fell once
about three feet and I half expected to open up the case and find loose braces or
horrible dents. It went through it unscratched. I dodged a major bullet there.

I can be a bit of a klutz sometimes. Such is life. :P

RE: [Hornlist] Cases for two horns.

2004-02-12 Thread Hans Pizka
Look at a luggage shop (travel utensils), look for an expandable board
case, where you can put both horn bodies in the lower compartment,
divided by a sheet of moss rubber or similar, while packing the two
bells into the upper compartment or on top of the upper horn, again
divided by a sheet of moss rubber. Do not forget to cut an appropriate
sheet of white flexible styroform (packing material for computers), fold
it twice & cut the middle corner out round in a way, that if you fold it
out, you will get a fitting hole in the middle. Place this over the bell
which get stuck into the other bell.

If you are a careful person, this should work.
Condition, the bells are cut quite low down.

Can't recommend these, since I haven't tried them, but Jim
Patterson's HornWorks is in L.A., and he offers several
custom mouthpieces that it might be worth the trip to try.
Though I can't recommend his mouthpieces, I can recommend
Jim as an intelligent craftsman interested in his customer's

I highly recommend Dennis Wick horn mouthpieces. I use them myself (a
standard 5N) and use them with all of my students (typically 5N,or 7N). Since I'm
on the east coast I order them via the web from Dillon Music who is also here
in New Jersey. For you west coasters, I would simply search the web for a
large brass instrument retailer and ask them if they currently stock Dennis Wick
equipment or can they order them for you from England. Hope this helps.

Hi listers,
Question 1: The university I attend here in Orange County, CA just
purchased two ProTec hard cases (not gig bags) for two of their horns (a

spend a lot on shipping back and forth if there are other options local to
