[Hornlist] one for the list :extra high , extra strong

2006-10-22 Thread Alon reuven

Hi all,
I wonder : when I play in extra high register ( playing D or E is not that
rare in my orchestra) I usualy use a very concetrated sound ,which does the
job for Bach , Haydn and any other chamber stuff . When I try to blast in
this range the note would not hold for more then a second - the strong and
fast air stream would simply split the small aperture needed. What do you
you do when you want to blast in notes above high C?

The only time you should need to really blast a note that high is at the
end of Symphonia Domestica if Sawallisch is conducting.

2006-10-22 Thread hans
Sorry, Sawallisch does not conduct any more. Mehta let me do
it also, but this was not the well known high e3 of the
Domestica, it was in the final chord.

For Bach Haydn´s high stuff, there is never a need for any
blast. All must be very delicate with light sound. Use a
deep mouthpiece to compensate for the loss on sound quality
when using the descant. But the descant use will benefit
with the silvery light sound.

For a real blast on high c or d or e, well, do it with
compressed air, lung stomach (diaphragm) working as a
compressor on the car. Precompress the air let it out in
a very strong but lip controlled airstream, but do not pump
the air through the instrument. If you run out of air after
one second, something is wrong. Well, it hurts the lips
(burning), if you play very high very loud, special if you
practise that a lot.
