If I' m not mistaken the ensemble calls it a Mnozil brass tuba or "Kronos". It is custom made by Melton and sold @ Schagerl. It is pitched in F w/ 5 valves and 3 triggers. -- Nelson R. [Hornlist] Tenor Horn in Mahler 7
I'm curious as to what instrument Mahler had in mind (and what instrument is commonly used today, if different) to play the Tenor Horn part for the first movement of Mahler 7. I've never had the opportunity to see a live performance. >From listening to it on CD, it sounds rather like a euphonium. (For those of you not familiar with British brass bands, a euphonium is a tenor tuba in Bb. Parts are written in Bb basso. The overall length of tubing is the same as the Bb side of a horn though the bore is of course much wider, and you use trumpet fingering to play it.) Looking at the part (I have it on the Orchestral Musician's CD-ROM) it is pitched in Bb, which would be consistent with it being played on a euphonium or whatever is the German military band equivalent. It goes quite high - the highest note is a written C# above the stave, almost the last thing the tenor horn has to play. Now this has got to be a joke. I'll grant the man an impressive range, but the technique and musicianship are horrible. Those albums he shows on his discography have got to be totally fictitious. You have to wonder how someone could work his lip up to that kind of range without working on basics. I suppose he could really be a better musician and is doing this as a joke, in which case it is rather impressive. It's hard to play that badly on purpose. Did you mean "abitur" ?? Means "Abgang" in German, Abgang from School, leaveing school. In Austria it is called "Matura" or Maturity, but it is anything else than maturity, but it is meant as "maturity to go to university". Yes, he thinks so. There are a lot of such folks. We got a hornfellow once, who auditioned for us. As it was behind screen, we advanced him to the next round to have sum fun. He could not understand why he was eliminated than before round three, as he did not miss any note, but how he played Out of tune & with a tone like a howling wolf And clumsy And ... And ... Intonation and phrasing problems were bad enough but the accompaniment was downright painful to listen to. Something I would expect to see on YouTube. Does he seriously think he can even come close to any of the greats he wants to challenge? The classic and perhaps best-documented example is Florence Foster Jenkins who you may read about on the Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florence_Foster_Jenkins FFJ's recordings used to be featured on classical music comedy shows, but in mentioning that I've heard such things I'm showing my age. There is one brief but stunning (in the sense of what they do to cattle with a bolt gun in a slaughterhouse) excerpt of FFJ accessible from the Wikipedia article, and there are additional and longer excerpts available on Amazon. I have held one of these original vinyl recordings in my hands. I have about in my long career twice encountered players who were similarly disillusioned about their performance abilities. Fortunately these individuals are rare.
