Can the old tire be used to make valve bumpers?

I have a set of Kumho V-710 (205-55-14) that I have used for one season of
autocross. With the exception of only one tire, they still have several
runs left in them. One of the tires is toast: a section of tread about four
inches in diameter peeled off to reveal the cord.

I have been trying to find just one used tire so I can get a few more runs
out of these tires with little success. Is it okay to purchase just one new
tire to complete this set? Would this cause handling problems?

I think friend Luke mistakenly posted this message to the wrong group.
But since Luke will have to scrap at least that one tire, perhaps
needy horn players could ask him for small segments of the tire for
use as valve cork material.

In my day we made our own autocross tires. Come morning I need to
check my rubber trees near the aligator swamp...

The R Compound tire is much too soft for bumpers. Too bad, I could have
made enough for everyone on the list.

Luke, I would replace a pair of the tires - throw away the trashed one, keep
the good one for a spare, and put the new tires on the same axle (either
both on the front or both on the rear).

I don't know about tires in the old days. I only started autocrossing two
years ago. Had to wait until the boys grew up and moved out.

The bumpers on my horn are too hard for tyres, otherwise I could have made
enough forwell, a bit of a tyre I suppose.
