Re: [Hornlist] NY Phil opening night 9/17/08
Sorry Jen, That is a third horn solo at the opening of Roman Carnival and that was Thomas Jostlein on third. Erik Ralske acting associate principal played first on the overture and the Ibert Concerto. The overture was played by Thomas Jöstlein. Sherry Baker -Original Message- From: Valerie WELLS <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: horn list Sent: Thu, 25 Sep 2008 2:55 pm Subject: [Hornlist] NY Phil opening night 9/17/08 I attended NY Phil's opening night last week, Wednesday 17th. They were, of course, everything I hoped & dreamed of -- fabulous! They did Tchai #4 & Berlioz's Roman Carnival & Sir James Gallway played the Ibert flute concerto. It was all magnificent! Also, at the beginning, they all stood to play the national anthem which was especially touching being so soon after the 9/11 memorial service. Here's my question for anyone who might know. The man in the principal chair didn't look like the pictures I've seen of Philip Meyers. If the principle was Philip Meyers, he's lost over 150 pounds & appears to have grown his hair out a bit. Does anyone know if it was Philip Meyers? If not, who was it? Whoever he was, he played beautifully. The whole section rocked. I wanted to go back stage to hopefully meet a horn player or two, but I lost my jacket which took a while to relocate & assisted an elderly couple for a few minutes who took a tumble on the stairs. Arkiv Music just sent out a notice that they are selling a DVD of the NY Phils concert in the PRK. We've beaten that concert about as much as its worth, but I can't help but wonder if they last moment to the Dvorak is edited or as played? ___ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org

I watched it, too, and think I remember Myers only played on the Tchaikovsky. Unfortunately, I did not carry away the same impressions as Valerie - I thought the overture was rather lifeless, and the big horn opening of the Tchaik was less than stellar (couple of horn goofs, and with intonation not quite locked in). Concerts are always much better in person, though... The NYTimes reviewer noted that they had just come off tour, and so may have been worn out. Re: [Hornlist] NY Phil opening night 9/17/08
Hi Valerie, I can't say for sure, but I may have an answer for you. The NY Phil's web site has a section on member of the orchestra which also has pictures. The horn section can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/4l6p89 There are pictures of each of the ones listed. The one for myers certainly doesn't look like he has lost weight. Erik Ralske, acting associate principal or Thomas Jöstlein, Assistant principal might be the one you saw. I have found nothing on in a rather cursory search of the web that would indicate who played. Regards... Tom Valerie WELLS wrote: I attended NY Phil's opening night last week, Wednesday 17th. They were, of course, everything I hoped & dreamed of -- fabulous!
