RE: [Hornlist] Request
Every horn is hand made, but using special tools & machinery too. Some parts are produced by specialists in larger series to provide the makers (valve slides, machinery, uni-bal, finger plates, springs, horse shoe, screws, etc.). But these parts are also made by hand, but using special tools & machinery (bending machines, calibration machines). And dear Daniel, a 10-20 percent dealer profit in Japan ? Have you had any experience regarding Japan ? I doubt that. But I have the experience, travelling to Japan since 1974 every year, often twice or three times, knowing all relevant outlets for horns & other brass. But one has to realize, that customs are different in Japan. The dealer has to pay different & much higher shipping costs than in Europe or inside the USA. The (good from the dealers view) customers also expects a certain "special" discount from the dealer (usually 10 percent), expects also being taken to dinner by the dealer (very expensive in Japanese restaurants - multiply your Florentine dinner expenses by two or three). So all these expenses are included in the final Japanese much higher price. The prices would be again much higher, if the Japanese sales tax would not be 3 percent but 16 or 20 percent as in several European countries (Germany, Austria). Dear friend, please do not exchange arguments in this field with people like me, who are at the real front in this business. RE: [Hornlist] Request
You are right, absolutely, but there are different prices in Japan, if one buys the horn at the Japanese dealer. Reason: price has to pay for promotion, entertaining customers, import duty, compensating the up & down of the exchange rate, shipment, etc. Like my horns: they cost 9.300 EURO instead of roughly 5.000 EURO list price. And the exclusive distributor/importer agreement makes it impossible even for me to sell a horn to an individual having residence in Japan. That are the rules. One has to understand, that manufacturers, who produce a limited low number of instruments, cannot afford to give some 30 - 40 % discount to the grossist (importer or gross distributor). If I would give this kind discount to a dealer, I would have to rise my list prices for roughly 2.000 EURO. Would this be fair to the single customer ? A piece of art, as the horn should be, is not comparable to any mass product, regarding discounts. The expected dealer discount of 30 - 40% is by no means comparable to the e.g. computer business, where grossists compete with margins between 2 & 4% only. My son is in that business & buys & sells monitors or PCs or components in the ten thousand quantities. Band instrument is another business than "real" concert instruments, also. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Daniel Canarutto Sent: Friday, October 03, 2003 11:23 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [Hornlist] Request At 12:00 -0500 2-10-2003, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: >from: (Hans Pizka) > >As far as I remember, this person offered a horn (Rauch) which he bought >>in Japan at Japanese price, asking for a minimum of 9.000.-$ > >$9K! Re: [Hornlist] request for brass quintet music suggestions
-- [ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ] Three other brass quintet pieces we used to play in the early days: "Dixie" - Emmet arr. Roberts - Cor Publishing - a fairly straightforward "air and variations" type arrangement setting the tune in different styles "Impressions of a Parade" - Samuel Baron - Pub. Schirmer - A fairly free arrangement of "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" (I remember liking this one!) "Sir Duke" Stevie Wonder arr Swan - pub Jobete Music - an arrangement of the old hit song - not the best piece I know, but the punters seemed to like it. I'll send you more as I find them (these three sets turned up when I was looking for something else) All the best, Lawrence ___ Horn mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://music.memphis.edu/mailman/listinfo/horn
Re: [Hornlist] request for brass quintet music suggestions
The Canadian Brass books are kind of fun (intermediate) and have a wide range of music from "canon in d" to "amazing grace" (jazz) to "Hava Nagila." I wouldn't recommend any of the other levels simply because they are boring. There is also "That's A-plenty", and some old renaissance music "Three Madrigals" (I don't know the arranger). I don't know your level of skill but "Classical Suite" by James Barnes is nice play off of classical pieces such as the third mvt of Tch. symphony no. 4, but is fun for anyone to hear. It features all the instruments and even has a movement that sounds like Frosty the Snow Man. The first mvt may be too hard seeing that it requires some triple tounging in all instruments but the tuba. I have played in a quintet for 9 years and it is the high-light of my day to play in it. I hope you have as much fun as I do. I don't really know what you are wanting to play for but there is a fun arranger that is not published but does excellent arrangements such as "It is Well with my Soul" (I seem to have forgotten the title), and 4 medleys of cartoons, old tv shows, old rock tunes, and star trek soundtracks. I have played all of his (John Webb) pieces for many people and all have loved the music. Anyway, I hope this helps and I can give you a better list later as these are just off the top of my head. Re: [Hornlist] request for brass quintet music suggestions
-- [ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ] Hi I played for ten years with a brass quintet and can send you a list of titles later, but I'm just off to do a gig now. Titles that we played when we first started which come immediately to mind: "Just Brass" Series: Frere Jacques Fancies Toyes and Dreams Susato Suite Echo Canzona King Music: Victor Ewald - Symphony for brass quintet (a standard classic) This Old Man arr. Nagel You could do worse than to look at the set of titles in the aforementioned "Just Brass" series edited, I think, by Philip Jones. They were published by Chesters Music but I'm sure the company was taken over by a larger publishing house later. The Robert King catalogue too could be useful. There is a lot of stuff out there! (and much of it is very good) I'll try to write more later, All the best, Lawrence ___ Horn mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://music.memphis.edu/mailman/listinfo/horn
