RE: [Hornlist] Eric Hauser's Horn?

2009-03-27 Thread Tim Johnson
I see that Ellen Stone has been identified already, but clicking the
link under the picture to the back of the photo, I see the name Mecklin
Marrow (at least, that's what it looks like to me). A search on that
name, however, suggest perhaps I am looking for Macklin Marrow,
conductor, composer, performer, producer, and Broadway music director
who would have been about 39 at the time the picture was taken.
According to a 1937 Time Article, he was known as "America's handsomest
symphony conductor"

He may also have been known as Macklin Morrow.

RE: [Hornlist] Eric Hauser's Horn?

2009-03-25 Thread Reicher, Tom
Thanks, Dick, this is very interesting history. By any chance have you come
across a player by the name of Bernard Mott. He played in Sousa's band and
then was principal horn in the Syracuse Symphony for many years. He was my
first teacher in the 1950s and a wonderful player and musician. I have no idea
who his teachers were, but he certainly was of the 5 valve B flat horn school
that was prevalent among many players of the time (a beautiful King 5 valve
with thumb stop valve; brass corpus but silver bell and first branch), although
he told me that he previously had played a Schmidt full double.

Sincerely,

Tom

Re: [Hornlist] Eric Hauser's Horn?

2009-03-24 Thread Herbert Foster
Some have thought the 3rd slide is the correct 3 half step length. However,
maybe it's 4 half steps--major third. This would give the dedicated
finger-wiggling Bb hornist many options...

Hi, Guys:

I'm puzzled by a horn in a photo of Eric Hauser:
http://www.rjmartz.com/horns/Hauser/

It looks to me to be a single B-Flat horn with a fourth valve perhaps intended
as an F extension, however the lengths of the third and fourth valve slides
seem wrong. Both appear to be too long for a normal third valve slide for a
B-flat horn and too short for an F extension. Actually the fourth valve looks
about right for an F horn third valve. Any ideas?

Also, does anyone recognize the other two people in the photo?

Any idea of the maker of Eric Hauser's horn? Looks to me like a King, based

Thanks to Ben Reidhead and Klaus Bjerre for explaining the horn. I was pretty
sure that's what it was but the lengths didn't look right to me at first glance
and thanks to Klaus I now I have a math headache.

I have not found any biographical information on Eric Hauser, yet. I have a
couple of other photos of him from Chautauqua and of course he wrote or
arranged several pieces for horn.

I have identified Miss Ellen Stone, the young lady pictured with Eric Hauser.
She was a New York freelancer in the 1930s and 1940s and a member of the
Pittsburgh Symphony. She was probably a student of Josef Franzl. I've started a
web page for Miss Stone and would appreciate any additional information about
her or Eric Hauser:

Re: [Hornlist] Eric Hauser's Horn?

2009-03-23 Thread Klaus Smedegaard Bjerre

I tend to agree with the other reply.

The 3rd slide isn’t wrapped as tightly as on a normal Bb horn.

Speaking in Pythagoras fraction, which is close enough to get the sense of
dimensions:

The F extension on a Bb horn has to be 1/3 of the theoretical length of the Bb
horn (the real horn is a bit shorter due to the effect of the wide bell).

The same way the 3rd valve of the F horn shall be 1/5 of the F horn length.
Compared to a Bb horn the 3rd slide of the F horn has this length: 4/3*1/5. The
resulting 4/15 of the Bb horn length is rather close to the 1/3 (=5/15) of an F
extension for the Bb horn. And that 4th valve is larger than the normal 3rd
valve of an F horn.

Re: [Hornlist] Eric Hauser's Horn?

2009-03-23 Thread Ben Reidhead
I think the 3rd valve slide is the right length.  It appears to be the same
basic wrap as found on the third valve slide of the single Bb that Adam
Unsworth plays.  A picture can be found at
http://www.adamunsworth.com/disc.html.

As to the 4th valve, I once heard that an F extention could be made for a
single Bb using a 3rd valve F slide, perhaps in combination with another valve.

Hope this helps,
Ben
