RE: [Hornlist] How to prevent pits.

As far as I understood your letter, you are asking about that ugly spots
occurring on the bell & other places of the horn, these green or dark
areas.

Well, there is just ONE way to prevent them:
Keep the horn clean. How ? go to a super market & buy some of these
cheap micro fibre towels (small size). Clean the horn off all the finger
prints left on it. When to clean ? Every break, after closing the
playing session, after the rehearsal or concert, or at the end of the
first part, or after every piece. It takes just seconds.

Develop a certain habit to do this kind of cleaning.

These micro fibre towels cost just 1.- to 2.- USD a pair.

Subject: [Hornlist] How to prevent pits.

   Hello all,
I was wondering ways to prevent pitting on your horn. How does it

occure, and is it only on unlaquered areas? How to prevent it from
starting? Can
it occur anywhere other than the bell?

   Thanks,
   Mike

In my experience pits occur on lacquered areas. Pinholes trap corrosive
chemicals (sweat), and a pit ensues. If a lacquered area develops pits, get the
lacquer stripped. I have heard that Lemon Pledge protects unlacquered brass.
The best preventive action is wiping the horn after use.

Where is cabbage, to tell of how the horn does in the pits, and how
hornplayers do, in the pits?
