most of the interest seems to be held by those who probably, with only very
few, if any, exceptions, will ever wear the dress, unless it is made into a
vest, tie, or boxers.

While a vest or boxers would be great there are other possibilities: a man
might want to get it for the woman in our lives, or I dare I say it - they
might actually want it for themself. I have learned that one never knows until
it's all said and done.

One (last?) moment with this thready thread - thanks, Ellen for making a
direct contact with Margaret Wilds. Too late, I see that we could
easily have googled 'denisebrain' to put all the pieces of the puzzle
together, including her page on myspace which explains the moniker, the
connection, and boasts a nice photo of Dennis.

I also note that the hand in the bell is not in an outrageous position.
Maybe she IS a horn player.

I note also that coins or metal discs have been soldered on the tips of
the valve paddles to extend them, something you see often enough on
horns to adapt them to a smaller hand size (or correct a maker's
miscalculation). The photo isn't detailed enough to show the mouthpiece
clearly, though.

Those are original equipment Lawson finger buttons, soldered onto that Lawson's
valve levers. It's a heck of horn to use as a photo prop, so someone involved
in the photo shoot is likely a real horn player.

Re: [Hornlist] Vintage dress

2008-03-02 Thread Ellen Manthe
Concerning the dress, the seller, and the horn; I would assume the young
lady IS a horn player since she uses the name denisebrain on ebay. Too much
of a coincidence. She is an ebay power seller and according to her ebay
listing, a member of the Vintage Clothing Guild. I checked out some of her
clothing and she seems to be successful at selecting and modeling the
clothing - that is, if she is the individual wearing the clothes. I am
bidding on the dress, although I will probably be too short for it. Check
her site out. I am going to ask her if she plays horn, although I would bet
she does.

I think so too, per other subtle evidence.

She's holding the horn informally as a horn player would. Would you let
a non-horn player hold your horn like that? With only one hand, and
loosely? Her easy grasp screams out the confidence and unconcern that
comes not only from been-there-done-that, but this-horn-is-mine.

Also, she is tilted back a bit - at about the angle that a relatively
light hornist might need to compensate for the weight of the horn when
playing it while standing.

Also, I copied photo#3 to disk and blew it up a bit - it looks like her
upper-lip lipstick is reddest only to the diameter of the mouthpiece.
Ok, that probably doesn't mean anything, but when you get the chance, go
see that great old Truffault flick, Blow-up.

Put all this together with the observations already noted here about her
clever nom-d'ebay and her natural hand position in the bell, and she
just has to be one of us.

Ellen M has just written that she will ask the seller if she's a horn
player. Well, that sure is going to wreck this thread.

Re: [Hornlist] Vintage dress - NHR

2008-03-02 Thread Ellen Manthe
It won't wreck the thread - unless she tells us. For all we know,
denisebrain may be the owner, but NOT the model. Then the model and
denisebrain may both be horn players. I did apprise denisebrain of all the
conjecture this one vintage dress has created on the Memphis list; however,
most of the interest seems to be held by those who probably, with only very
few, if any, exceptions, will ever wear the dress, unless it is made into a
vest, tie, or boxers. However, if the mystery will continue to generate
interest, she will never let us know and will use the horn as a prop more
frequently. And so, the Saga of the Dress, the Seller, and the Horn
continues...
