Another thing which helps avoid conflicts in the first place is when
you are tracing roads, make sure you put a node at __every__
interesection the road is going to connect to in the future, even if
that other road isn't already in the database yet. That way, later
on, when someone traces in that road, they can connect to your road
without modifying it since there is already a node at the intersection
for them to connect to. This means that the road gets created nearly
complete in version 1 and the only future changes to it will be minor
corrections or changes to the tags; but you don't get 100 different
versions, each with just one new node where someone connected a cross
road.

Re: [HOT] *** Emergency Request *** Guinea Conakry- Gueckedou, Macenta, Kissidougou

2014-03-25 Thread Pierre Béland

HI Michael,

Yes there are risks of
collision while editing. The Task Manager helps to reduce this problem.
But we stil have to be careful and find various ways to reduce risks of
collision

If for example, you cross a
primary road and decide to connect a new road, you have the risk to
collide with someonelse editing at kilometers from you. Then, to be
safe, it is better to save before you do this operation. You can also
select this long road, and in JOSM file menu, select the item Update
selected data.  You could also revise all the data aready loaded.

This will assure that you have the most recent version of this way. And save
again.

Working this way with frequent updates of data, I select the option to keep the
Changeset open after the upload. This avoid to
create a changeset for just one or a few objects that I upload.

Hi all,

my name is Michael and I support HOT as long as I've time. I'm quite
experience with satellite image interpretation (and crisis mapping,
professionally)  and I startet to map for task 463 in the north west
of Guéckédou. While uploading I got a version conflict. This is
probaly due to parallel working with task 465 (higher resolution
imagery) for the same area. Just want to highlight this issue and I
dont know if that problem is already solved (or if that is a problem
at all).

best regards,
Michael

It's worth noting that the 432 layer is the same as what I'm hosting. I'd
also suggest replacing the 19 with 14 when adding.

[HOT] Do you know about HOT's preset & Map Style for JOSM?

2014-03-25 Thread Will Skora
Hi everybody,

I just would like to remind fellow Hotties that there is HOT's preset
for JOSM and our JOSM map style (This is a separate from our web map
rendering).

Both were developed in Spring 2013 to help mappers in HOT contexts
(mappers near and far :)) have a more concrete classification system
and the JOSM map style is an alternative map styling in JOSM to better
display the OSM data within JOSM.

The Preset includes tags for HOT's mapping and the JOSM map style is
an alternative map styling in JOSM so you can better visualize what
you're tracing.

Installation is quite simple: for both of them: Go to JOSM's
preferences, select the icon the 3rd top icon

Then go to the presets page and select the HDM preset;

For the Josm Map styling, select the 'Map Paint Style' and select 'HDM'

More background is available at: http://hot.openstreetmap.org/updates/hdmjosm

Any questions and feedback regarding the map design and presets are
certainly welcome on here or 'Issues' pages for each of them at
https://github.com/hotosm/HDM-JOSM-style and
https://github.com/hotosm/presets

Happy mapping,
Will

it is not a big deal for this request, but we will need to ensure to

So let see if any other need from others agencies, as I have seen

Hi Yann,

This is something that Frederik Ramm helped the Red Cross out with during
the Typhoon Haiyan response. The code was a little rough and ready but
perfectly functional for our needs. Really helped out a lot for our
disconnected folks on the ground.

Perhaps we could follow up with him to see how ready to go that project is
right now? I've been meaning to do so for a while anyways.

Cheers,

Hi All,

Just a heads up that the International Federation of the Red Cross is deploying
health experts to Guinea now and will likely seek mapping support. We're still
unsure of exact AOIs and needs but we'll likely find value in some of the
tracing requested by MSF. As I learn more I will communicate more to the group,
likely within 1-2 days time. Thanks to everyone who's been involved in this
deployment to date.

Best,

[HOT] Libraries without Borders - Ideas Box

2014-03-25 Thread Yohan Boniface

Hi all,

I've been in contact (through uMap) with Libraries without Borders [1].
Among all the great things we talked about, they showed me a project
they are running named "Ideas Box" [2].
Basically, the idea is to provide a minimum culture access for disaster
situations (books, computers, Internet access, films...).
They already provide some GPS in the box for mapping, but there is
certainly more we can do with us.
The first element we are thinking to is an offline map for the area
around where the box will be shipped.
I've started a pad [3] to start looking at the best technical options to
do so.
I've a next meeting with their tech guy at the end of next week where I
will expose him those options.

So please join the brainstorming if you feel :)

Yohan

You only need to map what you see in the imagery that the instructions
says to use. Once that is done then you mark it complete. We might
make a second job over parts of the same area if we get better imagery
in the future.

Do you want the tiles marked as "Done" once you've mapped what can be
seen or just unlocked being as better imagery is coming in?

Hello all,

In order to support MSF-CH in their work in Guinea for the Ebola epidemic,
we would need to digitalise 3 cities:

Gueckedou (most Urgent)

Macenta

Kissedougou.

Please find AOI attached.

We would like to request the support of OSM community to do so. We are
simultaneously looking for high resolution imagery to facilitate the work.

Thanks in advance,

Audrey

Hi everyone,

thank you so much for your responsiveness.

We are still figuring out the details for the higher resolution satellite
imagery but it should come in a little later today.

Here are a few more info:

You can cite directly MSF-CH in the tasking manager if you believe that will
convince more mappers to help out (I do have written agreement from our
partner that they are ok with it since it is public by now anyway).

We really needs the 3 towns cited initially mapped in details more than
anything for now.

Thanks and I'll keep you updated concerning the higher resolution satellite
imagery.

Regards
Audrey
