[HOT] LearnOSM - updates

Hi,

LearnOSM has been updated recently - in fact its under constant review & 
update.


There are now significant parts of the site available in German, thanks 
to the efforts of Michael63-osm.


There are also additions to the Remote, Armchair & Mapathon section, 
including sections on (I've listed them this way as validators may find 
it handy to paste these links into feedback when validating squares);

[HOT] HOT Technological Development Timeline

Hello all, I am research student based in London, UK.

I am looking for a broad timeline on technological developments at HOT since 
the initial Haiti response. Does anybody had any information or could point me 
to relevant blog posts on this?

Hi Nick,

Thanks for the updates. Reading the "Contributing.md" page [1] I noticed
there are three options for helping with translations, but I did non find a
list of what needs to be translated. Is there a quick way to see what
sections need to be translated and have not been claimed by other
translators, other than comparing each page with the English version? What
if something changes in a page that has already been translated, can we get
an visual diff converted to tasks for translators to take care of?

I see there are labels in GitHub [2] [3] that may help with the process, we
should probably clarify the workflow of claiming/assigning translation
issues, so that work is not accidentally duplicated.

let me jump in as the one who (as Nick kindly mentioned) made a couple of the 
recent translations to German.

Unfortunately this is currently a big problem. I started with some advanced 
pages as the beginner section had already been translated to German. Then I was 
pointed to the fact that one of the beginner pages is out of sync. So I will 
clean that up in the near future. To my knowledge there is no tool which would 
visualize anything in this respect.


A good starting point would be to find out what changes have been made to a file 
since the last translated version of that file had been committed to the 
repository. This should not be that difficult to obtain automatically - then you 
need to get this into "human readable" form. I do however not know to what 
extent github supports something like this.

The "awaiting translator" label is only used once, so this is probably not what 
you are looking for. If you look at the "translation" label then we seem to have 
one issue thread per language which I think is not bad - just look for the 
latest activity and you (should) know what is currently being worked on. This is 
a least-effort coordination tool which will work unless there are a lot of 
contributors per language.

I have been working with Nick on the translation workflow of LearnOSM.

We are very much aware that it is not easy to find the sections that need
some work. Even more so when it is only part of an already existing page.
Of course if you are interested you can contact the LearnOSM team. We might
have a rough idea of the status for your language and provide assistance.

translated. You can provide ideas and feedback, just look for our recent

future will be smoother for our translators and us!

As far as I know transifex: it is intended to translate and keep up-to-date
strings that are used possibly several times in software code. It seems
less useful to tackle entire pages of unique text with headings and context
and flow and images.

That is the original aim of transifex, but there are projects that use it
to manage documentation translation as well. It is used for the InaSAFE
documentation for example(1). The upside to it is it is very easy to get
translators started and tracking of changes works well. The downside is
many people don't like doing the translations as individual strings.

Perhaps someone from HOT-id can mention their thoughts on this, since you
are the ones most familiar with the process.

Having worked with translators and translations on technical matters I
found that the best translations were done by a native speaker who worked
in the subject area.  When you try and translate a technical subject you
first have to understand the subject matter.  I once spent two hours
explaining the meanings of two lines of English to a senior translator who
wasn't happy with the quality of the initial translation.

In the end he accepted that the technical people all worked in English and
we would just do a sentence by sentence translational to the second
language that was essentially meaningless to satisfy a manager it had been
done.

It can be very difficult especially nuances.

Hi all,

It's my first post here so I'll present myself briefly. I'm Jorge from
Valencia (Spain), geospatial consultant, casual (hot) mapper and
member of the OSGeo foundation[1]. I've worked with transifex
(GeoServer Spanish strings), translated many docs from OSGeo Live
project[2], part of the beginner guide of LearnOSM a year ago and as a
matter of fact, yesterday started to translate the Coordination guide
also into Spanish[3].

About Transifex, at least in Spanish usually translations work well
sentence by sentence, even you need to have always the full text close
of course. I mean, a sentence in English almost in all cases can be
translated into a single one in Spanish so I guess Transifex could
work well with this kind of documents. And it's not just about
easiness or tracking changes, for me a very important matter is
consistency on the vocabulary, and with Transifex is easy to manage a
glossary of terms that different translators can agree, specially on
big languages like Spanish were things can be named quite differently
across Spain, Argentina or Mexico for example.
