Thanks Fran (and Joseph) – I use that all the time for copy/paste logs and

[HOT] Bangladesh Map Inquiry

2015-06-09 Thread Doris Hernandez
Hello,

My name is Doris Hernandez and I work as an Analyst with DHInfrastructure,
and I am writing to inquire about possible map sources for a current
project in Bangladesh. My company, DHInfrastructure, is a multi-disciplinary
consulting firm that advises on financial, economic and regulatory aspects
of energy tariffs and regulation.

We are currently working on evaluating the potential for solar PVs on
rooftops in the city of Dhaka, Bangladesh. One of the initial steps in this
research is finding a mapping source that allows us to distinguish what
building rooftops are suitable for solar panels (so, excluding slums,
buildings that are experience shade during the day, etc.).

Is there any source on OpenStreetMap that you might point me to to find a
map that may be in line with this solar PV on rooftops project? For
example, are there any maps that distinguish by levels of surface? or by
building heights?

I truly appreciate your help, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,
Doris

Re: [HOT] meetbot in #hot irc channel

2015-06-09 Thread Blake Girardot
I think it is a great idea. Most of our meetings are in irc and meetbot
makes nice work of the meeting minutes.

There are a few people in the irc channel most of the active hours, I
don't think anyone needs to be a board member.

We might want to adjust the output to include a mediawiki markup output
also so we can copy/paste into the osm wiki as well.

Thanks again for helping us out with this and hopefully we can get some
use out of it (like most things it will take a bit to get used to it :)

Cheers,
Blake

Re: [HOT] some issues about the HOT task manager

2015-06-09 Thread Oliver Richters
Dear Pierre,

thanks for your information, Tyler Radford answered to my mail to
i...@hotosm.org and suggested me to send my question to the mailing
list.

While it is obviously true that its not a problem if people are mapping
the stuff outside the district, it may create confusion if some people
think it should not be mapped (because it may cause mapping conflicts
with other tasks where this district is included) and others do.

I have put tasks as ready because everything within the district was
mapped, but others opposed that. I would therefore prefer that you
simply state somewhere that one should also map outside the boundaries
of the district to have a policy for that.

Thanks for all your work!
Oliver

2015-06-09 Thread Pierre Béland
Hi Oliver
If you look at the Task Manager issues on Github, these various problems (ie
polygon and comments) have been
reported.https://github.com/hotosm/osm-tasking-manager2/issues/

We have to work with these limits when we prepare a new task. If I use a
polygon to define a new Job, I myself look at the squares once I published it.
I usually indicate as completed the squares that are outside of the Imagery
available.
But for Nepal TM#1043, even if part of the box is outside the District, it does
not create any problem to map if the Bing imagery is available. For this
reason, we provide no instruction and let the contributors map it.

Objet : [HOT] some issues about the HOT task manager

Dear HOT activists,

I have a question and a comment concerning the task manager:

In the case of the Nepal mapping, the relevant area for a task is
usually following administrative boundaries. Due to the process of
setting the squares, the square at the borders usually contain lots of
space from outside the task area. Should mappers map the square or only
the marked area (blue)?

Sometimes, because of splitting, it may happen that squares lie
completely outside the area of the task. Map it or not?
http://tasks.hotosm.org/project/1043#task/201

I don't care what policy you prefer, but it would be great to know!

Second, one comment:
It would be a big improvement if the comments and edit history did not
vanish after splitting a task. If you receive a comment per private
message and the task has been deleted although it was just split up,
it's nearly impossible to find it.
If you split a task, the new parts should inherit the data generated
before and the old task should stay and link to the 4 new ones. Would
help a lot...

Taken the two things jointly: if you split a task and one of the squares
lies outside the boundary and should not be mapped therefore, it should
vanish at best.

Thanks for all your work,
Kind regards,

Oliver

Hello Mohammed Zia,

Currently there is an opening for Missing Maps Fields Roster in HOT, you
might want to check out this link:
http://hotosm.org/job/missing_maps_field_roster/2015. Alternatively there
are multiple ways to be more involved with HOT, either by mapping or by
joining a working group, more about this in http://hotosm.org/get-involved.

Re: [HOT] Task outlines for Nepal

2015-06-09 Thread Pierre GIRAUD
In case you don't see the "export" link which is most probably the
case if you don't have the sufficient permissions, you just have to
add ".json" to the project url to get the tiles exported as GeoJSON.

Pierre

Dear Sebastian,

Each task has an export URL (upper right corner). The export gives
you a geojson file which you can translate to shapefile.
Hope that helps.

[HOT] Task outlines for Nepal

2015-06-09 Thread Sebastian Langer
Hello everyone,

First of all: Thank you all for the work, time and effort everyone puts
into HOT.
I joined the mailing list only a few months ago, but I am really impressed
of the general support. - Glad to be a part of this.

I was wondering if there is a possibility to download the outlines for the
HOT-tasks for Nepal (preferrably as shapefile - or any other format that
can be converted to .shp).

I am currently preparing some visualizations for a poster to show the
mapping
efforts in Nepal and it would be great to spatially correlate the newly
mapped
objects with the tasking outlines.

Kind regards,

Sebastian

Hi,

Since this is the HOT mailing list I assume you're asking for research
with developing countries.

I don't have any developing-world info I'm afraid but here are two
items from Europe:

This UK report estimates that the OS OpenData initiative will deliver
a net £13.0 million - £28.5 million increase in GDP in 2016. The main
components of this increase are net productivity gains (£8.1 million –
£18.2 million) and additional real tax revenues (£4.4 million – £8.3
million):

This Danish report "documents that the free-of-charge agreement, as
anticipated, has been an important condition for realising
considerable social benefits of reusing public data on addresses":
http://www.adresse-info.dk/Portals/2/Benefit/Value_Assessment_Danish_Address_Data_UK_2010-07-07b.pdf

The UK Open Data Institute has more info and links in this guide: "How
to make a business case for open data":

[HOT] Greetings!

2015-06-09 Thread Mohammed Zia
Hello All,

I am a Geomatics Engineering PhD student at Istanbul Technical University,
Turkey. I love GIS and was involved with ESRI's products for five years.
Since last two years I am working on FOSS4G.
I am a huge fan of OSM and great minds behind the whole project. I am using
OSM data exhaustively.

After Nepal-2015 earthquake, I learned about HOT and how they are
generating maps for humanitarian causes. I have a strong desire to be a
part of this team, merely for work satisfaction. I had a long learning
curve with GIS and related tools; and believe myself to be a good asset for
any plausible GIS project.

I have a good proficiency in database-driven web-GIS, python programming
for GIS, QGIS, PostGIS, pgRouting, OSM data editing, Git etc.

Keeping the text short, I will stop myself here and will expect some future
voluntary participation in any OSM project, where my past experiences could
be utilized.

Best Regards!
